Choosing Which Blogs stay private and which can go public

I have a private blog of mine which is about what I do and only my friends can read using the URL, and I really want to keep it like that if I can help it. However, I want to set up a new blog that can go public to the world and his wife.

Am I correct in saying that if I create this second blog and tick the box saying public, my first blog won’t continue to be private, as people can probably access it via my username? If so, is there a way in keeping my private blog private, away from the new public blog I want to set up?

(I hope this made sense for people)

The visibility settings for your blogs are completely independent of each other. If you create another blog then you can choose which setting you want, in this case “public” and it will not in any way affect your “private” blog.

The e-mail address registered with your WordPress.com account is your unique identifier. If you wish to create even more separation you can choose to log-out of wordpress.com when you create a new blog and use a different email account to create another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-address/

P.S. Please either link your username to your blog or provide the URL for the blog in question when you post to this forum.

Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ and fill in the the complete URL for your wordpress.com blog starting with http:// and then save changes.

PS – if you write on more than one blog with the same user-name then probably the connection can be searched on – use a different name if you want more distance

@auxclass, that’s what I was afraid of, but didn’t want to log out and log back in to another account. I wanted to create a second blog that I can publicise to the world using this account, but keep my personal blog which is my first blog, personal, and just wanted to make sure it would before I went off and started a new blog

If you want them to be completely separate then creating two unassociated username accounts and registering one blog under each one is the way to go. Yes, you will have to log-out and in if your do that.

However, if you register both blogs under one username account you can set a “nickname” on the second blog and it will appear and display rather than your username. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/#change-display-name-nickname

@timethief Thank you very much :) I think I get the idea

One last question: If I changed my nickname to something else, will that show on both blogs, or just the blog you asked it to?

It’ll show on both blogs, unless you go in and change it every single time.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about the username too much. You’ve already posted HERE using that username, so Google and all the search engines now have the information that THIS username has a private blog. That info is useless without access to the private blog, though, which they don’t have. So, just go ahead and use the same username. People who read the public blog won’t have access to the private one.
