Choppy avatar?

  Hi!

  I’ve started using wordpress.com today… :)
  I uploaded my avatar, a 512×512 JPEG, and it looks way too choppy! It shows too many “artifacts”…
  The quality of the JPEG is very good so I really don’t know what’s causing this…
  What am I missing here? Could you please help me?

  Avatars really should be sized closer to the actual maximum size that will ultimately be displayed prior to uploading and that is 128 x 128. With the size you uploaded, you are relying on wordpress to do the resizing and cropping work, and they simply don’t do that good of job.

  Resize and crop your avatar in an image editing program to 128 x 128 and then upload it and things will be much better.

  And please, when posting a question in the forums, make sure and include a link to your blog or link your username to your blog as explained in #2 in the “8 things to know… ” sticky thread at the top of the main forum page.

  If it counts, I kind of like it the way it looks now. Impressionistic. Like an aggressive Picasso scribble. But if that’s not what you’re going for, I understand.
