Claim an un-used url.

  I’ve read several articles related to this subject and, if I’ve understood them correctly, WordPress can allow users to claim url’s that are inactive.

  I’ve tried to claim two similar url’s but variances were taken (but both have been inactive for several years). I commented on both and received no response.

  Is this possible?

  Blogs belong to those who registered them. There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. If you can make contact on your own then there is a means of a consenting blog owner to transfer the blog to another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account In the case that there is no contact information Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

  Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

  Thanks for the help. So I’d purchase a domain then ‘map’ it to a random WordPress url but the visible url will be the one I purchased? (Bit of a blog newb).

  Yes. Your visitors will see only the domain URLs and not the underlying .wordpress.com URLs. If you like to you can read this for more complete infomation > Do I need a Domain?

  You’re welcome. It’s my opinion that if you are committed to blogging over the long term purchasing your own domain nand establishing your brand is the way to go. If you do purchase a domain then know that if should you decide to hire a web host and set up a wordpress.org install one day then all you do is update the nameservers.
