Claim an unused site abandoned (but not deleted) 5 years ago.
-
The site was created five years ago and has never been touched, not one post, no design, nothing. It is like a lost ghost ship wandering through the seas of wordpress. I have posted a comment on the blog, but no answer. Given that it appears effectively and by all reasonable definition, abandoned, am I able to claim it?
Thanks for your help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot register a site URL that has already been registered. There is no expiration date on any on .wordpress.com blog URLs unused, reserved or otherwise.
Note that in these cases the blog’s owner rarely responds to comments or to contact information on the site but you can try that.
Note that Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address if you cannot make contact with the owner.

(sorry, cross posted and miss your longer reply)
ok, but here; https://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
It says “For the most part, we cannot recycle or reassign site addresses (URLs) which may appear to be abandoned.”That sounds like there is a space for that to happen under some circumstances.
-
Aside from making contact on your own with the site owner agreeing to transfer the sited to you, there is no space, and I can say that with confidence because I have answered questions here for 11 years. I predate the all support docs and all Staff members being on Staff except one.
-
Also the recycling blog names support doc is referring to sites that have been deleted. It does not refer to unused sites or reserved sites. Sites are reserved for matching username accounts.
-
On the first line it also says: For the most part, we cannot recycle or reassign site addresses (URLs) which may appear to be abandoned.
I am not sure about that line either, that it refers to deleted sites. The rest certainly does.
I appreciate your experience here very much.
If I upgrade to a paid membership of some kind, am I able to speak with staff via email? -
If you want purchase an upgrade then why dither about this at all? When you purchase an upgrade you get a custom domain and a I already told you above that iff you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs

I already own the URL .com address that it would be mapped to, I wanted all the advantages that come with the wordpress package however, as I don’t have the skills to set that up on my own site. Sure, I can import a free wordpress template etc, but that is a lot of work is it not, and I don’t have the spare time. Does that make sense, or am I missing something here?

There is no FTP access to any wordpress.COM hosted sites and no blogger plugin or theme installation capability.
No FTP access http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
No blogger installed plugins http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
No Uploading Custom Themes or Third Party Themes
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted sites like yours and wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multi user software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your WordPress.COM dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
We cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.P.S. Also be keenly aware that you cannot transfer any theme from https://wordpress.com/themes/ which is licensed and adapted to run on WordPress.COM software to a WordPress.ORG site, and visa versa. The two run on different software and have different versions of themes with the same names. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Ah, yes I am confusing the two. I am brand new to wordpress.
So all I could do, is point my own domain directly to a wordress.com name and it would still be anyname.wordpress.com, yes?
