re: mapping domains
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. Once domain mapping is in place every time one of the old URLs is clicked anywhere on the internet the visitor will be directed to the same content under the new domain URL.If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog and proceed as laid out here https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thank you.
One final question, Am I able to use my own template to design my website or blog?
-
No. There is no FTP access and you cannot upload custom themes or third party themes. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#uploading-custom-themes
-
If you are into designing your own theme by editing templates you will need to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting and set up a wordpress.org software install.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page -
