Clarification Needed on WordAds

  • Hi staff,

I found a contradicting information on the support documentation and the FAQ on WordAds.

At the Advertising section on Monetize Your Site page, it states that:

WordPress.com bloggers, who are using a Free or Personal Plan, have moderate to high traffic and appropriate content also have the option to apply to the WordAds program.

    But in WordAds FAQ page:

Q: Why do I need a custom domain name?
A: We are unable to provide WordAds for sites with the default free [example].wordpress.com URL, so you’ll need to either register a new domain name or map an existing domain name to your WordPress.com blog of choice.

Since free plan sites don’t have a custom domain, so they will not be eligible for WordAds even though they met the minimum traffic requirements. Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

    Thanks.

  • Hi staff-zara, several years ago, we only had Premium and several à la carte offerings, including custom domains or mappings without a plan.

It’s been several years since then, but there may still be folks who were grandfathered in with that setup, and thus would be on a free plan with a custom domain.

  • Hi @supernovia, thanks for the clarification!

My concern is whether the new free plan users might misunderstand that they could apply for WordAds when their sites met the minimum traffic requirement. I guess we might need to let them know there’s a third condition on the support document, i.e.

Only sites with a custom or mapped domain can apply.

    Thanks again. :)
