Classic Block: Adding Media inconsistencies Part 2
-
Howdy, I’m circling back to my previous forum thread at
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/classic-block-adding-media-inconsistencies/ which is now closedThe github thread staff-blorbo mentioned there https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/45480 was closed because the person who tested could not reproduce it. However, I’m still encountering this issue when trying to edit media added to a Classic Block in the default dashboard (Calypso). Clicking the editing pencil there brings up the Media Library rather than the image editing panel.
In my test this issue only occurs while using the default dashboard (Calypso) but not in WP Admin..
I tested in FF88/Win10Pro, as well as MSEdge 90.0.818.66 (Official build) (64-bit), but not in other browsers as I don’t believe this issue is browser specific.

Hi Jen. :)
Out of curiosity, is your test site public, or set to “private” instead? The reason I ask is because the Calypso image editing tools will not load on a private site, as noted here: https://wordpress.com/support/images/editing-an-image/
This is the relevant bit from that link:
While these image editing tools are free, the site must be set to public for the tools to work. These image editing tools are not available with a site set to private.
More context here on why image editing does not work on private sites: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/13625
If you set your test site to public (temporarily) do the image editing tools load as expected? If not let us know as that would indicate a different issue, thanks!

Hi. I noticed this issue months ago, and it’s still working this way for me, on both Firefox (FF 88.01) and Google Chrome. I presumed it was due to bad design, just one of many bad design choices IMO immediately evident when initially trying out the Block Editor.
After the jump to the media library, an image editing window can be opened by clicking the “Edit” button at the top of the media library. Why there? Your guess is as good as mine. It’s as if the designers thought we might click on the wrong image in the post or page, and want to give us a chance to choose a different image from among the 10,000 images in our media library. Anyway, when I click the “Edit” button at the top of the media library it opens an unnamed window where I find Title, Caption, Alt text, and Description field, each of which can be modified, as well as the Image URL, which can’t be changed. There is also an “Edit Image” button in this unnamed window which when clicked takes you to another window where you can perform various manipulations of the image, including rotating, cropping, and flipping.
I’ve never reached the Advanced Image Options screen, that is available in the WP-Admin editor, via the Classic Block, as you indicated you had in the topic Classic Block: Adding Media inconsistencies.
With regard to staff-totoro’s post above, these are my results on a public WordPress.com site, using the latest Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.

Thank you for the explanations staff-totoro and @musicdoc1 My original tests were done on a private site, but I have redone them just now on a public site without any change in behavior.
However, I’m not referring to the editing tools that appear in the Calypso Media Library on a public site after selecting an image and clicking Edit, as mentioned at https://wordpress.com/support/images/editing-an-image/ but to the “advanced options” panel that appears when clicking the image and then the Edit image icon in the Editor’s Classic Block when in the WP Admin interface like this

staff-totoro Given my reading here https://wordpress.com/support/images/image-settings/#advanced-options it appears then that this advanced options panel is only available in the WP Admin interface, regardless of whether one is using the Classic Editor or inserting a Classic Block. If so, this is now clear, but probably should be mentioned in the support doc. There might be users who prefer using the WP Admin interface while using the Classic Block in the Editor. :)
My misunderstanding arose from expecting that the behavior of clicking that edit image icon in the Classic Block would be consistent across Calypso and WPAdmin. Apparently that is not the case.
Thanks all.
@kokkieh Good morning and thank you for reopening the github issue. I’ve been working on this reply between first coffee, breakfast, exercise and 2nd coffee and only refreshed to see your reply now. Please read what I’ve written above and let me know what you think. Thanks. -

I would expect the classic block to give the classic editor options for this, rather than taking you to the Calypso media library. So I’d hold off on any support doc changes until we’ve had clarity on this from a developer.

/two thumbs up!
So just to make sure we’re on the same page here, even if one uses the default Calypso dashboard and inserts a Classic Block in the Editor there, we’re expecting that clicking on the image edit icon in the Editor to lead to the Advanced options panel and not to the Media Library? Thanks again. :)
(Feels like a script for “Inception”)

That’s my expectation, yes. Though I could be wrong, but the way it currently works definitely feels unintuitive to me.

the “advanced options” panel that appears when clicking the image and then the Edit image icon in the Editor’s Classic Block when in the WP Admin interface
Okay, got it now. I’d forgotten that you can use the Classic Block in WP-Admin, because I’ve had scripts that prevent that from ever happening for so long. : )
it appears then that this advanced options panel is only available in the WP Admin interface, regardless of whether one is using the Classic Editor or inserting a Classic Block.
That’s what I’m getting for results too, on FF and Chrome, private or public site.
I’d like to add that IMO the Image Settings support page demonstrates the superior elegance of design in the WP-Admin interface vs. Calypso with regard to image settings.
The three sections of the Image Settings support page are Attachment Details, Within Posts and Pages, and Advanced Options. Each section covers image settings that are available somewhere, but where they are available is different in each case:
- Attachment Details — These settings are available via the media library only, not directly within the Block Editor.
- Within Posts and Pages — These settings are available via the Block Editor directly, but ONLY, according to this section of the support page, when using the Image Block, one block out of 75 presently available blocks.
- Advanced Options — These settings are available either via the Classic Editor, or via the Classic Block, but in the latter case only when opened in WP-Admin.
Conversely, via the WP-Admin Classic Editor virtually all of the settings available in those various locations, under very limited circumstances in case two, are available, in all cases, in a single window called Image Details that is opened by clicking an image in the editor window and then clicking the pencil icon. The only option of any significance (of those listed in the first two sections of the Image Settings support page) that I notice missing from Image Details is the “Description” field, which is reached in WP-Admin via the Edit Media window instead.
If and when changes to the Image Settings support page are to be made, it might be helpful to note that “Advanced Settings” is found within the Image Details window, and that to view those settings might might be hidden under the word “Advanced Settings,” requiring one to click on the word (or the caret beside it) to display the settings.

Regarding the second section of the support page, “Within Posts and Pages,” applying to only one block. I know this is not surprising news for those who are familiar and comfortable with this blocks idea, but it still seems peculiar to me.
