Classic Editor
-
I would like to go back to working in “Classic Editor” – I don’t know how to navigate the new “block” changes that WordPress put on. Please put back editing in “Classic Editor” Thank you. You can reach me at (email visible only to moderators and staff)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, I just discovered that my beloved Classic Editor seems to have disappeared!! I created a new post five days ago as usual (I’m a longtime user and have more than 250 posts on my blog, all with Classic Editor), and edited that same post as usual just yesterday to correct a typo. However, when I logged in a few minutes ago (Thursday the 16th) I saw a quick popup message about the “Posts area is improved”, and suddenly the option to choose the Classic Editor for post creation is gone. :-(
I then looked for the option to edit any post with the “Classic Editor” link and that is gone also.
Used the AI assistant to ask if this is a bug or a change; its response seems to be outdated because it didn’t work. Activated the Help Chat 20 minutes ago and am still waiting for a response…. I suspect I won’t get one… :-(
Like you, I hate the Block Editor. It is totally antithetical to my workflow which is to write my entire post offline in Microsoft Word and then paste the entire thing into the Classic Editor. I then upload and insert my images manually via the Media Library. I do not want to work with individual blocks of anything!
Did you also experience the same change/disappearance of Classic Editor? Mine was definitely working yesterday because I corrected those typos around midday (Eastern time) as I recall. But have not logged into my blog since then until about a half hour ago.)

I’ve lost the classic editor as well, and I’m not at all happy about it.
FWIW, my workflow is similar to yours. I write offline in Word, then import the post to Google Docs and use the “WordPress for Google Docs” extension to load it into WordPress, where I use the classic editor to make final tweaks and add the graphics.
I can’t make heads or tails of the flippin’ block editor.

I’ve always selected Classic Editor when writing new posts. It had been a long time since I tried writing a new page. When I tried it this evening, there was no option for using classic editor on these.
In the Help Center I was given this advice:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Under Settings → General, ensure the “Admin interface style” is set to “Default” and not “Classic“.
- Navigate to Pages or Posts.
- In the upper-right corner of the screen, click the “View” tab and select Classic view.
- Hover your cursor over the page or post you wish to edit, then select “Classic Editor“:
The thing is, that “View” tab doesn’t exist on “Pages” or “Posts”, and changing to “Classic view” on the dashboard itself still doesn’t enable the Classic Editor on pages. Having gone back and forth on these settings several times, I now have lost the Classic Editor option on posts as well.

No warning, no announcement, the Classic Editor function is just gone and to get it back WordPress wants you to upgrade your hosting plan. I hate Block Editor, it is totally non-useable for how I write. Such pitiful customer service WordPress!

I too am missing the classic editor, and get no response despite repeated attempts to ask ‘Help.’ Is the only way to get it back to upgrade my plan?
-
I don’t know how long this solution will last, but I find that if I add “&classic-editor” to the end of the URL when editing the page it takes me back.
-
I am literally in the process of purchasing a web host as I type this. I am so blankety-blank furious about this. No warning, no nothing, just a pure money grab by making the Classic Editor only available as a plug in for which one has to pay (at the cheapest!) $300/year for the Business Plan upgrade. WordPress.com expects me to pay $262 more a year (I just renewed last month as triennial, bringing my $48/yr Personal plan down to $38/year) for the privilege of using a User-Friendly Editor? Seriously???!!!
Way to lose customers, WordPress. This one is already on her way out the door…
-
@robinstanleytaylor, does that workaround allow for creating a new post in Classic Editor though? or just for editing?
-
-
I’ve found another trick – go to “All Posts” and then click “Filter”. Somehow all the Classic Editor buttons reappear.
-
Just tried that… doesn’t work for me/does nothing. :-(
I discovered a few years ago that WordPress.com doesn’t play well with the Firefox browser, but it works fine with Opera which is Chromium-based. So that’s what I have been using. Don’t know if the workarounds are browser-dependent but they might be. The addition to the URL didn’t work for me either.
-
And in an ironic aside, about an hour ago (as I was fuming about this change) I got a message through the system: “Happy Anniversary with WordPress!” (oh, where is the appropriate emoji when one needs it?!?)
Well, I am celebrating my WordPress Anniversary by leaving, and it’s 100% their fault. ;-)

I have been told by AI support that the only way to use the Classic Editor is to upgrade to a plan where you can get the Classic Editor plug-in.
-
A Happiness Engineer tells me that the AI bot is possibly wrong. The steps we are being told will bring back the Classic Editor are not working and that might be a bug. The Happiness Engineer will get back to me by email once they have talked to the ‘team’.
-
I think you are the first person here to have actually gotten a response from a real person about this. ;-)
I did try the “bot advice” first and of course found out that it doesn’t work. One thing I did notice when I logged in earlier today was a banner pop-up saying something like (don’t remember verbatim) “All Posts has been improved for a better user experience” or something like that. Which leads me to believe that the elimination of the Classic Editor was intentional because that’s the ONLY change that I can see to that section or any other.
Even if this is a bug, let’s face it: WordPress.com never said that they would retain the Classic Editor forever (except as a plug-in for the expensive plans). So even if they, in their infinite wisdom, deign to let people who have Personal or Premium accounts use it for a while longer, I am sure that option will eventually disappear. I’ve already signed up with a different host and will be moving my site, along with the Premium theme that I bought three years ago, elsewhere.

I tried suffixing ?&classic-editor to the URL after creating a new post and it gave me back the good editor. Don’t know how long that will last, but it’s functioning now at least.
-
IMO, it’s unlikely they’d remove the Classic Editor without advance notice. &classic-editor added to the URL works for now until they fix this
