Classic Editor

Even if this is a bug, the fact that it has existed for more than 24 hours, with multiple users trying and failing to get any response from a real person (and the AI bot giving incorrect information), and posting on this forum without any response from WP staff, speaks volumes.

How hard would it be to have ONE staff member come into this forum and at least post a comment that “We are aware and are working on it” instead of leaving everyone in the dark? That cavalier attitude speaks volumes.

Users shouldn’t need to depend upon other members to figure out a temporary patch for a bug that WP itself doesn’t seem inclined to acknowledge exists.

They’ve already lost one user (me) and I’m only waiting until I can finish putting my theme and Classic Editor plugin on my hosted-elsewhere site to actually cancel my account, although I expect that I will have to wait weeks before they deign to refund any of the triennial renewal that they received from me less than a month ago…. *sigh*

Ironically, I considered moving to another host about a year ago but ended up shrugging and saying “well, it works okay I guess”. But when they start messing with the Classic Editor, either on purpose or by accident, that’s it, I am done.

Perhaps others use a different “flow” ?? I have always used /wp-admin/edit.php and can continue creating posts the “proper” way today.

    Today classic is back.

Maybe about 2-3 months ago, there was another problem with tags and the older editor was the workaround for being able to use them. It took several days (without much communication, though) but they fixed it. I suspect that will happen with this problem, as well.

Someone said that they were able to get it working through another browser, besides Firefox. So, if that is the case, then it might simply be a matter of waiting for a Firefox fix.

Still no response from WordPress on any thread related to the Classic Editor?

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions – read and tried them all – but I still cannot publish on my websites today.

While I waited for a response from actual living “happiness engineers”, I established another website on a service most professional journalists I know here have recommended and migrated to. My work will continue there.

Without the fully functioning Classic Editor, WordPress has lost all relevance.

    My original help request: /wp-admin/edit.php

    WP
Classic Editor option for new posts has vanished from all my websites!

I am unable to publish articles with the new editor since the classic editor has disappeared. Can you restore it immediately? If not, I will be migrating to another host. This is non-negotiable.

I use the same link (/wp-admin/edit.php) but my view is completely different. There is no drop-down choice – no “Classic Editor” option anywhere. I have been on WordPress for over 15 years and have thousands of posts and know the system well. Nothing I do will restore this feature. Only WordPress can and they appear to have chosen not to.

The Happiness Engineers told me this morning that due to user’s feedback, the classic editor has been returned. I was told to make sure that in Settings – General – to set your Admin Interface style to Default Style.

“User Feedback” … LOL, I guess they didn’t want to admit to the reality which was more like “Massive Angry Outcry”. ;-)

    Hi IntrigueImports,

Even though the new-fangled Gutenberg/Block Editor is being pushed on us as the default editor, the beloved Classic Editor is still there ….. a few clicks away. This is how you get to it as of 01/19/25:

    If Writing New Post:

    1. Click on “Add New Post”, then when the composition box opens up, look for the plus sign to the left side of the “Add Title” “Type / to choose a block” label.
    2. Click on that plus sign to open composition options that include “Classic” with a keyboard icon on top of it. That’s it.
    3. It editing a pre-existing post, just rinse and repeat by looking for that fortuitous plus sign.
    4. I think it is understandable to be concerned about the way this beloved editor is being “hidden” (in a manner of speaking), but as long as you see that plus sign, there is hope for the day. But that said, your insurance is to have a text copy of each and every post of your blog, JUST IN CASE ……..
    5. OBITER DICTA: WordPress should take serious note of legacy members who have (so far) steered clear of the Gutenberg/Block Editor as ominous writing on the wall. LONG and THE SHORT OF THIS: There are members (the dwindling remnant) who will desert WordPress if forced to mandatorily use Block Editor. Simple word to the wise. MOOG

On the flip side, I’m actually stuck in the classic editor for viewing the posts and pages tab for the WordPress admin. Their used to be a tab at the top of the page called “view” that allowed you to switch between the two viewing options. Additionally, in the pages view, there is not option to sort by most recent, only by the month in which it was published, which is really weird.

Alternating between classic and default editor in general settings did nothing to change anything in the posts and pages viewing tabs.

    The option before:

    The current viewport:

I can see the fully functioning Classic Editor is back. I’m so happy. It makes my life so much easier. Thank you everybody.

My classic editor has only just disappeared – they waited until I had paid my yearly sub! Tried the bot but I can’t see the ‘classic view’ at all. Can’t edit from the desktop either. Hanging on now waiting on the Happiness Engineers talk to me – been waiting for ages too!

Please can you advise how I can add the Classic Editor URL ??

    Thanks

All WordPress.com websites have the Classic Editor enabled, but you need to access it through the Classic/WP Admin Posts or Pages dashboard. See the screenshot that @themagicrobot shared above https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/classic-editor-122/page/2/#post-4069321

I’ve tried everything everyone has mentioned and nothing seems to work. Question, where exactly do you place the “&classic-editor”, at the end of the standard WP URL, or the URL you see when you log in?

It’s my fault not moving to something new, but after more than 10 years using the classic editor on the same WP site, it was easy and I could focus on the subject matter, not the intricacies of WP. I was forced to look at the block editor yesterday and it doesn’t seem that daunting, but would take me a several days to get the hang of it–days I don’t have. I’m launching a new book soon and need to have it featured on the landing page of my WP site.

Something went afoul yesterday when I tried the block editor and I actually lost content from my landing page and was unable to recover it or unable to add anything new.

Yes, the official solutions are to upgrade to the business level, from the personal level and then you’ll be able to use a classic editor plug-in. Shame on me for not backing up my site properly and I have no idea how to do that without a back-up plug-in. A chicken and egg situation.

Alternatively I could switch from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and use the classic editor plug in, but again I’m warned to back up first. And would I lose anything from the more-than-a-decade of writing on WP?

If I could just get classic editor back temporarily, it would give me time to learn the new system–or switch to another provider. Also, I have my domain name through WP and I have to carefully guard that, too.

Glad to see I’m not alone. Sigh.

One last thought. For some reason the classic editor shows up for some of my pages, but not others. Anyone have that issue? Alas it doesn’t show up for my landing page which is the only one I need to modify.

@mbaconauthor, I would like some clearer direction on the “where and to what does one append the &classiceditor as well. Right now I have (fingers crossed) it working with a different append to my log-in URL but, given the unpredictability of the CE access lately, would like to have a possible backup.

Speaking of which, re: backing up your site, I hate to suggest this but would you be able to get someone to literally copypaste each of your post texts to a Word doc and download all images? Because if you are planning to move to WP.org, I read on this forum just a few days ago that they (.org) are no longer allowing the use of XML files which is what the WP.com exporter generates.

I have always created a folder for each of my (200+) posts on my computer, and everything that’s on each page into the file. This isn’t a problem for me because I write in Word anyway, and simply copy-paste it into the Classic Editor when I’m ready to upload. But if your workflow is to write directly into the CE itself, that may not be a good fit for you.

That said, I have noticed that as of a couple of days ago, the copy-paste method is not always transferring the paragraph breaks, etc., from the Word into the CE, as it always used to do. It is annoying because I then need to tweak those areas but IMHO that is a million times better than the Block Editor which I despise and refuse to use. I’d rather not write at all than use that miserable thing.

    Hi @mbaconauthor,

Question, where exactly do you place the “&classic-editor” at the end of the standard WP URL, or the URL you see when you log in?

You need to put the parameter &classic-editor to the end of the post/page URL that doesn’t have classic editor editing option under the title. So yes, you can only do this after you login to your website.

For example, this is my post URL created in the block editor https://sample.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=17&action=edit

To open it in a classic editor, append the above parameter to the end of the link https://sample.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=17&action=edit&classic-editor

You will be presented with a pop up, saying “This post was previously edited in the Block Editor. You can continue in the Classic Editor, but you may lose data and formatting. Because this post does not have revisions, you will not be able to revert any changes you make in the Classic Editor.”

This classic editor editing ability also related to your next question, where you find classic editor shows up for some of your pages, but not others. Because the default behavior of adding a post/page, like selecting the ‘+ New’ button in the top toolbar or “Add new post” (without choosing an editor) will automatically open the block editor. For those posts/pages, you need to append the &classic-editor parameter.
