Classic editor

Is the classic editor still available? If I try the new block editor, will I be able to switch back?
SUGGESTION: none of the help pages about this have dates, so I don’t know when these changes happened and if the classic editor is still available in any form. PLEASE PUT DATES on articles which tell us about changes to how WordPress works.

Hi @storystag, thanks for the suggestion. We’ll pass it along to our docs team.
And yes, with sites on our servers, you can still access the older classic editor via wp-admin:

Hi @supernovia, thank you for your reply.
I’ve tried the WP Admin route you linked, I’m afraid that doesn’t work. The Classic Editor simply isn’t there, three’s nothing between ‘Edit’ and ‘Quick Edit’, unlike the screen grab on the support page.
My other question was whether I can switch to the new editor and then switch back again?
Thank.

Hi there,
My other question was whether I can switch to the new editor and then switch back again?
Yes, you’ll be able to switch back. But you can stick with the new editor and use the Classic block (https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/). This way you can have the best of both worlds.

Thanks, @fstat, I’ll try that.
Continuing the question about the Classic Editor…
I see there is a classic editor plug in:
I don’t know how to install this. Literally, what do I do after clicking ‘download’?
Thanks,
Noam -
One more try: I might need a more basic explanation of what’s going on here. I don’t have wordpress installed, I only use it online. I don’t know how that effects the editor options, but I now see that the above plugin relies on downloaded software. I’d rather not go there. If there’s a page which explains these differences in a non-technical way, please direct me there.
Thanks

Hi there,
By installing classic Editor plugin. This will disable your latest block editor and you able to use classic Editor.
But for this, you need to upgrade to the business for installing the plugin. You can have a look at this screenshot http://prntscr.com/tyxcjaThanks.

Thanks @rakib8373. I’m not going to upgrade. It looks like that limits my options. Again, I might need some really basic help here. What are my editor options when I’m only working online, and on the free programme?
I haven’t managed to work the classic editor via admin.
Sorry for repeating the question, but nothing has worked so far.

Hi there, Plugins such as the Classic Editor plugin are intended for use on sites using the standalone version of the WordPress software that can be downloaded at WordPress.org, or on sites here on WordPress.com that have either the Business or the eCommerce plan.
The options that the rest of us WordPress.com users have is the Classic Block in the Block Editor and the Classic Editor in the WP Admin interface once you change your existing MySites Classic Editor to the Block Editor, if you have that option.
Keep in mind that the entire WordPress.com platform is changing over to the Block Editor as default in the near future.

https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/Once the entire platform defaults to the Block Editor, you’ll be able to continue writing in the Classic Block or to go to your site’s WP Admin and choose to write in the WP Admin Classic Editor. https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor
Hope that helps make it clearer. Post back here if not.

@storystag This account you are using is 6 years old. Is the site you wish to use the classic editor on also 6 years old? If so there should be no issue accessing the classic editor via /wp-admin. Are you sure your site isn’t already set with the classic editior? Only if you are working with a new account created this year will the classic editor option not display. But the “classic block” at the block editor is a reasonable substitute.
-
Thank you @justjennifer and @themagicrobot.
After perusing all those pages, I think my site is, in fact, now using the classic editor. I managed to switch it back from blocks at some point. Sorry for the confusion.
Will the classic editor remain a possibility for the foreseeable future?
-
Hi there,
The block editor will become the default editor in the near future, fully replacing the classic WordPress.com editor. However, the classic block is a great option if you enjoy and prefer the features of the classic editor:
