Classic Editor
-
I am an unpaid town historian and I use WordPress for our monthly blog. A couple of months ago, WP started defaulting to Block Editor (Which as far as I am concerned is absolutely useless and a total weed-based concept.) I would like to set my site to default to classic editor but I have read that to do that I need to install the classic editor plug in. To do that I have to ‘upgrade’ to a pay service. This is so far removed from maintaining good service. I realize that I can revert to Classic editor by taking a few steps that should be unnecessary. But you have ruined what I considered for years to be a state of the art platform.

Hi @hillsdalehistorians, to be honest, I wouldn’t even recommend upgrading to install Classic: even that is not going to be maintained forever, so it’s better to address the issues you’re running into, if possible. If something in particular is bothering you, let us know specifics. Unfortunately we can’t do much with general criticism.
You can still access classic in the meantime (for now!) as follows. I’d recommend bookmarking a link if that’s your choice.

I am very disappointed that the classic editor is not a permanent option for those on WP.com. It is more functional and user-friendly is easier to use, and creates a visual layout during the construction that is easier to follow, edit and have a sense of the final product. For users who rely heavily on Microsoft Word for other work, it is so similar in feel and use that to switch to the alien format of blocks has ruined one of the best products out there.
If WP wants to be cutting edge, for those users who prefer an environment similar to working in Word, then make the Classic editor a default option. As time goes by, more users will eventually be block users but respect the loyal base WP has built by offering the classic editor as a default choice.
-
We the people want the classic option. The old classic option. Tell the powers that be they are becoming more difficult to use and we are all going to just use blogger.com in the future if they don’t stop trying to control us. We want the old classic blog. EVERY DAY, there are people here complaining about this block editor and you people won’t listen.
I was going to pay for a blog but I won’t be using wordpress. You are quickly becoming useless.
-
Hear hear, every time I post something I make a draft in my favorite editor and maintain several copies locally.
This way I could check local what it will look like and then copy paste it to WordPress.
It’s much quicker and easier then doing this in the WP session, saving draft and asking for a example.
Sure hope this is enough to get it back, the new 1 is dreadfull… -
The new block editor is a total disaster. Where do the idiots that run WordPress come up with the idea that bloggers are some sort of tech gurus – I blog on various different blogs about things I know about e.g. my main site: http://www.collectireland.com but at 62 I am a technophobe and this new editor inflicted on users is a sure way to close me down.
-
I’ve tried to get the hang of the new block editor & and just fed up. If I can’t find a way to use the Classic editor that doesn’t cost me $300 a year, I’ll investigate other blog options.
-
My specific objection is: it is not user-friendly for those of us who have basic PC skills. I want to spend my time writing, not becoming a layout editor. As I said in my previous post, I’ve tried to “get used” to the block editor, and it has not become familiar to me.
I spend most of my time trying to figure it out, and not writing. Can anyone recommend sites that allow you to spend your time writing instead of learning to become a graphic designer?
-
The block editor is so hard to use and navigate and get things just right. The new classic option isn’t even a real option. I can’t select all of the text at once because it automatically puts the paragraphs into the ridiculous blocking that I was just to get away from! My blog is literally a bunch of text and one image. The blocks are great for some but useless for me and many others.
Also, what happened to the image padding feature again?! UGH!!!! Please don’t make me code padding every time again. Stop making things so complicated!!!! We beg you!!!!
-
At this point, Medium looks like a better option for me. I don’t need all the bells & whistles, and it seems that WP is not interested in the users who just want a place to write.
-
Yes well……
I guess I have PC skills a little above basic.I’ve been using the Classic for some years.
In the beginning I had to learn a lot, but after a while I understood how html /css works and I could use snippets of code to get pages as I wanted them. Next out was Elementor, which was quite easy to learn (BTW Wordfence just announced today critical safety issues with that one).So now back to WordPress.com – and gees! more to learn. I can’t say I was thrilled to discover the block editing, but after a couple of weeks – and adding css – I think I will get the hang of it down the road. I could have used a theme, possibly, but I don’t. It will take some time to have the site set up as I want it, as clean as I want it.
“so it’s better to address the issues you’re running into” Supernovia wrote. I think I’m there. And for what it’s worth; when you do run into issues, you can post them here and get help.
Well……… -
I appreciate the positivity, and am glad the new layout is working for you. Personally, I’ve got too many other stressors in my life right now. For the basic things I want to do on a blog, maybe WP just moved beyond my abilities.
-
I started this thread and I am pleased that others agree. What bothers me is the prospect of moving to another platform when I have 40+ monthly blog posts on WordPress. I am a local, appointed (unpaid) historian and people want to be able to read all or any of my previous posts, esp. if they are new in town. I can’t begin to figure out how to migrate all those posts to another platform. So I am a hostage to WP and that’s not good. BTW, I pay WP for a theme for a second blog I do (chrisatkinspr.com) (been busy, need to post) so it’s not like WP makes no money from me. Also, I can’t tell if they are putting ads into my historian posts but if so, they are getting the money, not me. Does not pass the smell test.
SAVE CLASSIC EDITOR! SAVE IT NOW!
-
Thanks for nothing, WordPress. I was finalizing this month’s post yesterday and today it was gone. You switched over to block and lost my 900 words. Fortunately, I had an old version in Word so I could recover. But it now takes three clicks to do most of what used to take one. Very cumbersome. Typical IT wonk not taking the time to learn the actual needs of users. Instead, “Hey this looks cool, let’s throw away what works and try something else.”
BUT THE BIG ISSUE IS…I can no longer go back and edit previous posts. When I try to, I just get the first paragraph. That’s it. In preview or on the actual public post, they look fine but I can’t edit there. These are posts about the history of my town and sometimes new facts come to light making it important to go back and make revisions. This is no longer possible, or at least I can’t figure it out. COMPLETELY UNINTUITIVE!

I am still waiting for assistance:
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/unable-to-work-on-any-of-my-news-sites/As stated:
“Access to the Classic Editor and Classic dashboard has disappeared and the page replacing it keeps buffering so I am unable to post anything.
Is the system down or is this a new form of torture implemented for professionals accustomed to “Classic”?”
I now notice several others having similar issues:
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/cannot-find-classic-editor/
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/classic-editor-76/
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/is-the-block-editor-somebodys-idea-of-a-joke/
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/thank-you-for-wiping-out-2-hours-work/They are also waiting for a direct and specific answer to a very simple question:
How do we access the original Classic Editor, not the Block Classic?
-
-
How can I find the classic editor?
Things seem to have changed again today and I am no longer able to switch back to it.
Is it now gone for ever or am I missing something? -
Classic Editor is gone. And so, apparently, the ability to go back and edit previous posts.
-
Where are people going from here? It just took 15 minutes to do a 3 minute post and it isn’t even what I want it to look like. What site will take our old posts for free?

The direct way to the Classic Editor
Without any response from WordPress, a friend sent me a link everyone can use to reach the classic dashboard and editor.
Insert your website address:
Support offers no support. The merits of the Classic Editor has been discussed to death on this forum and at no time has WordPress acknowledged the detailed technical feedback from users. In that sense, nothing has changed.
Let play with the new editor if they must— just don’t remove access to the Classic Editor!
