Classic Editor

You have heard this complaint before, but I feel the need to contribute my two cents.

Today, I could not access my Admin page, or Classic Editor. WordPress obviously doesn’t care about people like me as these criticisms have largely been dismissed.

I come from a generation where we had a motto, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ Yes, we are technically challenged. I don’t own a cell phone, or ‘devices’ as you youngsters call them … but I can write and take photos which I like to share on WordPress.

It took me six months to figure out how to use Classic Editor, and I cannot figure out how to use the new editor. Why everything has to change is something that’s difficult for me to understand.

Each generation has the hubris to think that they are smarter and can do things better. You know, life was simpler back in the day, but in many ways it was richer and more fulfilling.

Technology is displacing our humanity. This has gone unnoticed by a generation that was born with a USB cord and not an umbilical cord.

Society talks about diversity and inclusion except when it comes to old fogies like me. We aren’t extinct yet so I will figure out a way to stay relevant. My photo blog is slowly migrating to Flickr, and I can revive a dormant Blogger site that is much simpler to use.

I am sad, depressed and disheartened but I want you all to consider this:

One day soon, in the blink of an eye, you will become the elder generation. By then, technology will have passed you by and you’ll see things as I do.

It will happen. May society be more compassionate and considerate towards you … though it’s unlikely.

  • Hi there,

It sounds like your account has been switched to the unified navigation, which is being rolled out on WordPress.com. You can read about this here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/unified-navigation/.

If your account has been switched and you used to access the Classic Editor through WP Admin, you’ll need to turn on the Advanced Navigation in your Account Settings>Dashboard Appearance to access the Classic Editor.

The Classic Editor is currently available, but in the long run, you’ll want to give the full Block Editor or the Classic Block a workout as the WordPress core development team do plan to phase this editor out in the future. The more you use it, the easier it will become.
We have a guide specifically for writers and bloggers that you can find here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor-for-writers-bloggers/. We’re also happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the Block Editor.

    I hope that helps!

I turned on Advanced Navigation, but the sidebar looks the same and I see no option for Classic Editor. I find it curious that paid plans automatically default to WP Admin. It seems to me that all of these changes are designed to compel free users to upgrade. Make it difficult so they’ll pay up. I mean, that’s the impression out in the blogosphere. (My Gravatar may be different as I’m replying from another browser.)

My apologies, I have found the Classic Editor option. Thank you for your time.
