I logged in today to add some poems to my site only to find that the classic editor has been taken away can you tell me why please? I am now expected to pay £240 per year if I want to install the classic editor plugin yet again why? I am not happy with this as I only added some work to my blog last month and things were working fine if someone could get back to me it would be much appreciated thank you. Without paying I can’t carry on with my blog it’s not fair

  • Hi there,

The classic editor was removed from the open source WordPress software when version 5.0 came out in late 2019. That software is made by the community on WordPress.org.

We use that same software here on WordPress.com, so if the software changes, it also changes how WordPress.com works. So it is no longer possible to switch to the classic editor completely, as that editor no longer exists in the WordPress software.

On WordPress.com we do offer the classic editor plugin pre-installed on all sites, so the editor is still available here, and there’s no need to upgrade to the Business Plan to use that plugin. But it cannot be set as the default. To use the classic editor, go to https://wordpress.com/me/account and enable the setting to show WP-Admin pages under Dashboard Appearance.

Now if you go to My Site ->Posts, you’ll have a choice whether to use the classic or block editor when editing or creating posts.

That said, the classic editor plugin won’t be supported indefinitely, and once the community on WordPress.org stops supporting that plugin, it will also stop being available on WordPress.com. At that point the block editor will be the only option, so I strongly recommend you give it a try. We have detailed tutorials on how all the different blocks work:

There is also a classic block in the editor that mimics the feel of the classic editor, and that will continue to exist even after the classic editor plugin is retired.
