Classic Editor – font style not showing

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there!! I’ve been writing posts in the Classic Editor for a long time because the editing font matches my blog theme’s font. I’m currently using the theme ‘Twenty Sixteen’, but after trying out the block editor (which I don’t like), I switched back to the Classic Editor but the font no longer matches the theme font!!! :( it became some serif font I don’t recognize.
Could you please help me with this bug – because I really love this theme & want it back to the theme text font when I’m creating the post. I tried switching to another theme – the Classic Editor would work again in matching theme font – but not when I switched back to Twenty Sixteen theme :(:(:(

    Thank you!!!

  • Howdy – I see you have around 30 or so sites on your account. Which site are you working on?

You may have tried this already, but after switching back to Twenty Sixteen, did you try adjusting the font settings in Customize > Fonts back to “Default”? Example: https://d.pr/i/MmRtOc

Hi, the site I need help with is lirijourney.wordpress.com

I tried to switch to the default theme font, however there was no such option in customization available under Twenty Sixteen – it just showed me a list of all the fonts available. I obviously chose the font I want – Source Sans Pro – to see if the editor font has changed.

But no matter which font I switch to, the editor is still using the Merriweather font I never chose…

Hello – Have cleared my cache, cookies and data – still not working :((

    I’m using Chrome – Version 80.0.3987.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)

  • Hi there,

The classic editor (that is, the one at My Sites) has always had a fixed font. It used to use the Merriweather font, and in 2017 that was changed to the Noto Serif font, and the classic editor uses that font regardless of what theme you’re using on your site. From what I can find the classic editor has never used the font of the theme applied to the site, so if it did that for you, that was a glitch that probably got “fixed” by your action of switching to a different editor.

So I’m afraid what you want is not possible – there is no way to have the editor for any specific site use a different font – Noto Serif is hard-coded into the editor.

If you’re referring to the classic editor in WP-Admin, that uses the theme’s default font, but only with some themes, as support for that has to be added to the theme. The Libre 2 theme you currently have on https://lirijourney.wordpress.com/ does not use the theme’s font in the WP-Admin classic editor, but instead uses a system font.

Twenty Sixteen, which you originally had on your site until a few days ago, uses the theme’s default Merriweather font in the WP-Admin classic editor.

    Hi kokkieh,

Thank you for your response – I was indeed referring to the Classic Editor in WP-Admin all along.

After a bit more investigation – I basically found that in this classic editor, most current themes do match their default theme font in the editor, and sometimes even the default font and background colour if there is one.

I’m disappointed that the new editors don’t do it – I think it’s a great feature to be able to edit & see a draft post in the format it will finally look like.

  • Actually, in the new editor, you can change the font and see it applied to the post in drafts. When editing the post, in the right upper corner, click on the letter button, have a look:

    Hi fresatomica,

My new editor does not have this option :( The ‘A’ between Block and Jetpack does not exist…

  • Hi there,

Yeah, it looks like that feature is theme dependent. The newer themes that are fully compatible with the Block editor has it, but Libre 2 does not have the feature.

If you are open to updating your theme, the above link would provide the option for you.

    Thanks,
