Classic Editor Gone Missing – A Response

A couple days ago my blog editor turned into a nightmare with the imposition of Block Editor and the simultaneous hiding of Classic Editor.

I came to the forum in search of a solution and found so many other Members have also been adversely affected.

The inadequate response by WP staff and some Members has prompted me to add my own here.

Make of it what you will. Add to it if you are moved to. I have no intention of engaging in fruitless argument.

To WP.com, support staff and some other Members.

Your response to the demise of Classic Editor and the imposition of the crippled Block Editor is ultimately unconvincing – perhaps you don’t believe it yourself.

The WP staff response to this issue throughout the forum is generally cut and paste, evasive and indifferent, with some Members obviously parroting the official line. Occasionally I see a genuinely helpful response.

This is about the Classic Editor gone missing. We are already paying for what we were getting and you took something away and replaced it with a shiny new complicated and inferior version. People don’t want a crippled and complicated editor, many many people by the looks of it. And the option to upgrade to a paid ‘Premium Editor’ is not a solution.

In these Covid times it looks like you (WP.com) are taking advantage to impose something nobody with experience wants, and nobody is convinced by the assertion it’s only sunshine, we can smell the burning.

It looks like you (WP) have hidden the editor people want, Classic Editor, and replaced it with something complicated (Box Editor) and crippled that eventually leads to an option to buy a Premium Editor, by design.

It looks underhand and exploitative and judging by Members responses nobody is convinced of the official line the change is for our own good.

I don’t see any threads hailing the new Block Editor, just complaints about the missing Classic Editor.

This kind of behaviour kills the goodwill of WP Members stone dead, but maybe you don’t care.

Maybe goodwill is just old-fashioned these days.

    ‘Show me the money.’

  • Hi there,

I understand that changes like this can be frustrating, but the block editor is not going away.

The block editor has been the default editor in the open source WordPress.org software since version 5.0 came out in December 2018. We have been maintaining our own version of the classic editor on WordPress.com for the past two years to give people time to make the transition, and to make sure the biggest issues with the block editor were resolved before we made the switch here.

That time has now come, so the block editor is now the default on WordPress.com, same as on any website using the open source WordPress.org software at other hosting providers. The classic editor hasn’t gone missing. It has been completely removed.

For now you can still access the classic editor in WP-Admin – it’s added via the classic editor plugin that’s installed by default on all WordPress.com sites and does not require any upgrades to use.

But that also won’t exist indefinitely: when the classic editor plugin was created by the WordPress.org team they made it clear it’s a temporary measure to ensure backwards-compatibility while themes and plugins are updated to work with the block editor, and it will eventually be retired.

So eventually the block editor will be the only editor in WordPress.

If there are specific aspects of it you find difficult to use, or if you find anything that isn’t working as it should, let us know and we can relay that feedback back to the developers who make this editor over on WordPress.org so that it can be improved.

You guys used to like to be known as Happiness Engineers, to serve the WP community I suppose.

So why you would want to take away a perfectly functional editor and replace it with the dogs breakfast of box editor is beyond me. It has to be said.

    Anyway, ce la vie …
