CLASSIC EDITOR VANISHED!

  • Unknown's avatar

WHY are you making me take double (no; 3 times longer as having to complain!) the time to write a brief post duplicating and amending a recent post, just because Classic Editor facility has been removed from my desktop???

Please reinstate because family and life commitments mean blogging is done in specific time-slices; hence my time is far too valuable to waste.

Btw I did try inserting a brief para into latest but as it included a quotation requiring red-lettering I had to search and then found your new editor’s colouring failed utterly!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh and not to forget the double-time required to insert a hyperlink’s url and then edit to enable it to open in new window, whereas in Classic it was all done in one fell swoop!!!

Hi there, can you help us understand better where you don’t see the Classic editor option? If this is on a site created before February and if you mean on the Posts dashboard, if you created the post using the Classic Editor, you should see a link to edit it in Classic Editor if you hover your cursor over the Post title.

If it’s not that, please give us more details.

(Note that new WordPress.com sites created after February no longer have the Classic Editor option. Instead, try the Classic Block. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/ )

Hello Jennifer, my desktop used to offer that full selection of options as shown above for published posts. Whenever creating a new post it would have the Classic draft features for my writing. After drafts got published they’d then show ‘Classic Editor’.
This has been so for all my thousands of posts since Nov 2011 ’til now, except the very few I’ve had to create recently in your new, too-cluttered style (ughh just cannot find what I want!)

Hope that may help Jennifer as am now starting our evening offline…

Just tried hovering over option but nothing changes.

PS. To be clear, I have those same options you show EXCEPT ‘Classic editor’

Since I’m a forum volunteer and do not have access to your site’s dashboard, could you take a screenshot of what you do see and share it here.

I have a few busy days coming up, but I’ll try to get back when I can.

  • Hi there, @richardjbarker!

I completely understand your frustration, when something you’ve relied on for years suddenly seems to disappear, it can really disrupt your workflow, especially when you have limited time for blogging.

The good news is that Classic Editor is still available when you change your Admin Interface Style to the “Default” view. To find this setting, navigate to Settings → General in your dashboard. Full steps are here: https://wordpress.com/support/editors/classic-editor-guide/#how-to-access-the-classic-editor

Once you make that quick adjustment, you should see the familiar Classic Editor option return when you hover over your pages and posts with all the features you’re used to.

I know this has been frustrating, but this should get you back to your usual efficient blogging workflow. Let me know if you need any help with these steps!

Thanks and have completed and find hovering works, whereas previously that was not required as everything was displayed under each title. (Suppose the change reduces load upon the server.)

YET FULL Classic Editor is not available for new posts because legacy-style right-hand menus are no longer showing!
For example, I wanted to do trial-run of alternative new ‘test’ posts but needed to change usual ‘Visibility ‘from public to private, as unnecessary for my subscribers to get hint of the trouble. But your new column doesn’t have that. (Have just tried changing it but it’s gone and cannot return to what was there.)

Please convey to your very top managers my deep disappointment after 14-years highly satisfactory use of WordPress > when something works well it’s always best to leave well alone!

Your help really is appreciated but 2 hours valuable time taken up over 2 days :-(

I’m curious as to the issues you’re facing. Screenshots would be really useful I use Ctrl+Print Screen and save in “paint” and then crop them before I put the images in my Media Library.

Are you definitely working in the WP/Admin/Classic Editor? Is it just a matter of changing from 1 column to 2 columns to get things “on the right” or is something else happening???

    It can be frustrating sometimes

  • Hey @wp20250217,

Please let us know if you have any follow-up questions regarding this very topic or consider starting your own and we’ll be happy to follow up there too. Thank you!

Hello staff-raypatrick, will send screenshots when back at desk for full blog-day tomorrow and I found how to toggle the RH side-screen via icon at top.
Btw, could my Win 11’s browser (Brave) settings be the cause, altho’ used it since late ’24?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, am using ‘Default’ in Settings/General as instructed, but suggest the two options need reviewing as your instruction seems contrary to their description.

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress.com has always been difficult to navigate . After 20 years I still find their “logic” isn’t in tune with mine. You’d think if you wanted to use WP-Admin to manage your site along with the Classic style then you would tick that. But no, you tick the opposite button. And you have to remember to “save changes” which is unintuitively hidden at the bottom of the page?!?

When you say you toggled the screen icon at the top it sounds like you are making new posts using blocks when I think you’d be more comfortable using the Classic way.

  • Unknown's avatar

@themagicrobot I think “toggle the RH side-screen via icon at top” might mean the Screen options tab to change the layout in the Editor in two columns. (?)

  • Thank you for the feedback richardjbarker!

Looking at your site, I see all the options of the classic editor are available, including the option to change the privacy. If you’re not seeing that when editing your post using the Classic editor, please consider clearing the cache on your browser, then, if it persists, send us a screenshot of what you’re seeing in the editor.

This said, we understand that some design choices may appear as unnecessary workflow changes, but the classic editor has been set to retire years ago, and the platform is focused on modern editors that offer advanced features that help site owners to stay up to date with modern standards and experience expectations. I am sure you understand that these decisions are not taken lightly, and are made after the evaluation of the number of users impacted in consideration of the average quality gain.

Thanks mxhdema and have clears all history of both browsers Brave and Chrome caches and note your link doesn’t refer to Brave – (btw is theirs an issue).

BUT STILL FAILURE!!! Drafted 3rd and 4th Test and found 3 is fully functioning for me to return to and work in Classic, despite being in block style when hitting ‘Add Post’ to create. BUT that did NOT happen after saving Test 4!!!
    Screenshots follow next

SO something REALLY IS malfunctioning and seriously hindering today’s progress.
After 14 years of smooth fast working regret I have to advise my readers to follow my Telegram channel and Fakebuk

THIS is how I like to write in Classic and return to

Here’s shots of today’s efforts with what I find on opening drafts

  • Unknown's avatar

Your new-fangled ways are extremely cumbersome and time-consuming as my writing necessitates scheduled time-slots to avoid impinging on family time. I’d hoped to have used the time to continue pruning my media library – could that high volume have an impact??
