Classic view

Hello. I understand that the classic view that I have been using the past 13 years on the backend from WordPress is going to be limited or terminated sometime in 2022.
I would like to know from what date precisely do you have scheduled to remove the classic view because I do not intend to use WordPress anymore if you are terminating the classic view. I wouldn’t use the Gutenberg view if someone would pay me to do so. I would need to know that ahead of time in order to explore other platforms and get familiarized with their platform.

  • Hi there,

The classic editor is still available on WordPress.com thanks to the Classic Editor plugin, that is automatically installed on all WordPress.com sites. The classic editor will only be available on WordPress.com for as long as the WordPress.org community continues to maintain that plugin, and they recently indicated that they plan to end support for that plugin towards the end of next year.

An Update on the Classic Editor Plugin

I can’t tell you when exactly that will happen, as this isn’t something we control. The WordPress.org community who makes both the open source WordPress software we use here on WordPress.com, as well as the Classic Editor plugin, will make the decision exactly when to retire that plugin.

Once that plugin is officially retired on WordPress.org, it will also no longer be available on WordPress.com.

The Classic Editor plugin was always meant as a temporary measure to help ease the transition for site owners, as well as theme and plugin developers, to the block editor introduced in WordPress 5.0. It was never meant to be a permanent alternative to the block editor, and we’ve always been clear that it won’t be available on WordPress.com indefinitely.

If you prefer the feel of the classic editor, I recommend you use the classic block instead. It is part of the block editor, and exists to ensure backwards-compatibility with older content on sites that predate the block editor, and there are no plans at present to remove that block from the editor.
