Classic vs block editor

Block editor missing: tags feature, shortlinks, edits must go back to draft

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, If you are using the Block Editor at MySites on a WordPress.com site, on the right sidebar, with “Post” clicked at the top, you’ll find both categories and tags (temp screenshot)

To get to the shortlink, first highlight the Jetpack icon at the top of the sidebar
    (temp screenshot)

I’m not certain I understand your last point about “edits must go back to draft.” Could you please clarify that? Thanks.

    Hi justjennifer

    Thank you for your response!

For the tag category, in classic editor, you can copy paste your tags with commas in between all in one click. In the block editor, this feature doesn’t work, if you copy paste a bunch of tags separated by commas (as is written should work) Only the last tag shows up. So you have to enter all tags one by one, it takes longer…

When I go into Classic editor from the “All post” on dashboard, I can simply edit and update any post even if the post is scheduled or published.
In Block editor, Once the post is scheduled or published, it prompts with “Switch to draft” if you click on it it says “Are you sure you want to unpublished this post?”. Short answer No, all I want is to change one word. If the post is scheduled, you have to go and reschedule, all extra steps you don’t need to take with Classic editor.

Another thing is you cannot switch as easily between the HTML or code editor and the visual editor as you can in the Classic view, again find it and extra clicks. Once you revert back to visual, repeat the clicking if something needs to be changed.

In conclusion, there might be new fun features in the Block editor but it is at the expense of what was convenient and good in the Classic editor.
I find I waste a lot of time clicking away. I think programmers like to make things more complicated to justify their jobs sometimes.

I am thinking of switching my website to WordPress but all this makes me hesitate and also the lack of support and answers to my questions. I really appreciate that you followed up.

Hi there, as far as I can tell this is only the third time you’ve posted to these support forums, and all your earlier queries were addressed. ?https://wordpress.com/forums/users/enviroart/

Tags: you can start writing the first few letters and an existing tag should appear. Click it and it’s there. Also, if you repeatedly use the same categories or tags on your posts, have you thought about copying an existing post or creating a blank draft post with those tags and then copy that post each time?

    Editing published or scheduled posts:

n Block editor, Once the post is scheduled or published, it prompts with “Switch to draft” if you click on it it says “Are you sure you want to unpublished this post?”.

I can honestly say I have not experienced what you are describing and I’ve been writing with the MySite Block Editor for several months, including editing already published posts and scheduled posts. I don’t wonder if this is something new. I will check and post back here.

Editing in HTML and Visual in the same post I don’t regularly edit HTML, but there is a feature in the Block Editor toolbar that can change a single block to HTML. https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#edit-html-in-the-word-press-editor Alternatively, there is the Custom HTML Block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/custom-html-block/

I’ve also gone ahead and flagged this thread for Staff to note your feedback and address the issues you’ve raised. Thanks for adding more specific details. Things tend to be slower on the weekends, so thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Hello again, I’ve now checked a scheduled post on my main site in both FF latest and Chrome latest from the MySite>Site>Posts dashboard, I am not prompted to “Switch to Draft”. There is a link at the top right next to Preview that says that, but I’ve only made my corrections and clicked the Scheduled button again. No need to change anything.

I don’t wonder if there might not be a bit of A/B testing going on, so will wait to hear Staff’s reply to this and your other feedback.

Do let us know in the meantime on which of your WordPress.com sites this is happening on and what your set up is: OS and browser with versions. Thanks.

I have no problems when copy-pasting tags on my end.

Is this is not what happens when you copy-paste?

    Not in the block editor
When I click “return”, it registeres only the last tag not all the others.

    Thank you for your responses!
And here is another thing that just popped up on one of my sites today: enviroart.wordpress.com in the Block editor:

“Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post.” I tried several times without success.

Yet is works fine in the Classic editor- Sooo, why should I bother switching?

    Frustrating…

    @enviroart,

In Block editor, Once the post is scheduled or published, it prompts with “Switch to draft” if you click on it it says “Are you sure you want to unpublished this post?”.

As @justjennifer indicated, the “Switch to draft” link at the top right of a post editor is simply an option. There’s no need to click that link in order to edit a post, whether it’s in published or scheduled status.

In the block editor…if you copy paste a bunch of tags separated by commas (as is written should work) Only the last tag shows up.

Like staff-doublebassd, pasting in tags separated by commas worked without issue for me.

My set up: desktop PC, Windows 7, latest FF (79.0)
