CLASSIC WIDGETS
-
I want to use the CLASSIC WIDGETS and downloaded the zip file. Unfortunately, the file contained in the ZIP file is a .php file. I have a free account and do not have access to upload said .php file to my site. Do I have to pay for an account in order to continue using the CLASSIC WIDGETS? I feel like I am being held hostage, once again.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hi there,
We’ve recently refactored our widget editor so you can use both traditional widgets as well as blocks (from the block editor) as widgets too.
Are you having an issue with a specific widget on your site? We’re happy to take a closer look if one of those is giving you trouble.

It sounds like you are referring to the Classic Widgets plugin, and it is possible to add this plugin, but to do so your site will need to use our WordPress.com Business Plan. It’s not possible to use plugins on free sites.
However, the Classic Widgets plugin is not a permanent solution. it’s only being kept active until 2022 according to the plugin authors. At some point even the plugin will be retired, so if you are having a specific issue with the current interface please let us know so that we can have our developers address that in future updates, thanks!

That gives me plenty of time to make a decision about where I want to live on the WWW…
