clear cache

Hi – I can’t figure out how to clear my cache without installing a plugin, but I have the free version of WordPress so I can’t install plugins. I found an article that said to contact the Happiness Engineers to get a Clear Cache button installed. Can you do that for me? And then tell me how to find it?

  • Hi @buffology, we clear cache automatically fairly regularly. If you’ll let us know which cache you’re trying to clear though, or why, we may be able to force a refresh on our end.

Be sure to include a link to the affected post or page along with more details.

    Hi there,

The effected page is my post page, which I call blogology. It’s supposed to have a widescreen photo of a pink flower at the top of the page and the page heading “blogology.” Below it posts should just have the linked post title and the date, and sometimes a preview. Each individual post looks fine but the post page does not.

It looks correct when I am editing it from the customizer:

    https://buffology.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=6&action=edit

But not when you visit the site:

    https://buffology.wordpress.com/blog/

Is there a separate cache for each page? Maybe the cache isn’t the problem, but from what I’ve read/my limited knowledge that was the best diagnosis I could make. All of my other pages are fine. Thanks for your help!

  • Ah, this is because it’s the posts page, not a normal page.

You’re seeing your selected theme’s post page act as intended, just a listing of posts. Not all theme’s support featured images or additional content on the posts page.

Then why would the preview show me the page with the featured image if my theme doesn’t support it?

Can I change the theme of just my posts page so that I can include a photo? Or will that mess up all of my other pages? I know I tried changing my theme once and it erased all the changes I made to my homepage, and I had to do it over.

What you see when you preview the Blogology page from the editor is the static content you added to that page.

But you have assigned that page as your site’s posts page. If you assign a page as the posts page, any static content added to that page gets ignored, and instead it just displays a feed of your latest posts.

If you want that page to appear it does in the editor preview, you need to unassign it as the posts page – go to My Site ->Design ->Customize ->Homepage Settings. Where it says Posts Page, make sure no page is selected.

A theme is applied to the entire site. It’s not possible to change the theme for just a single page.

I know I tried changing my theme once and it erased all the changes I made to my homepage, and I had to do it over.

It did not erase anything. It just set your existing homepage to draft, and activated the default homepage for the theme instead. Some of our newer themes do this when you activate them.
