Okay, I am slow to social media. The notion of menus, widgets and sidebars confuse me. i have posted five posts thinking most would be general but due to circumstances I have one full book review and one mental health related post. How can I best sub-categorize posts so that if this hobby grows visitors will be able to target areas of interest. Is this what widget and menus come in to play? How can I be sure they are cross referenced? Do I need to be more specific with categories?
I am working at the free level running the twenty eleven format until I determine if this is more than a passing fad.
Please help. I have watched the intro videos but I must be a slow learner. Also if I play with custom settings it does not effect my published content until I chose to update right?
Sorry for needing a trail of bread crumbs here.

1. Create and assign Categories to your posts.
You can do that now by editing them.
For editing see:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/For Categories see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-categories-module
2. Create a custom menu and add your dynamic Categories pages into it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Depending on where you watched the videos – they might be for a WordPress.ORG install – they will confuse you ans some say rot your brain – please use the links @TT gave you above – if you go through all of them things will be much better

I think I was random with categories starting out with no obvious objective. I am best to clearly define the category, add keywords with tags or is this where parent categories have a vale to define broad themes?

Categories tend to be the high level outline
Tags are used to fine tune the Categories
Note – less is better and no more than 15 total (Cat & Tag) per Post

Hi again,
Support docs are at http://support.wordpress.com
Categories http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
Categories vs Tags http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories-vs-tags/
Topics – Missing posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-postsNote that all of this is covered in the step by step Staff tutorial at http://learn.wordpress.com
Also note that WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and different. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ The tutorials online are focused on WordPress.ORG and are not useful for your WordPress.COM blog. In fact, they will only confuse you.

Thank you so much for the prompt feedback. Perhaps now that I have had a chance to get my feet wet with a few blogs the tutortial material will begin to make more sense to me.
