Clearest, simplest instructions for image blog??

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, after three extremely frustrating days, I cannot find any straightforward instructions for settling up a simple image blog/site that will show my artwork, with basically no text except for captions under the images.

I have started over countless times, and read countless sections of very confusing instructions, and am ready to throw the computer out the window. I have learned to choose a theme, to choose some settings (which don’t always cooperate), to upload an image onto a page or post, and to caption it. But I still can’t find how to put together a home page, with the very few sidebar items I want, nor how to make a second image in a new post appear under the first image on a page. Pretty hopeless here.

Is there one place on this site (or elsewhere) that takes a person step by step through this process, clearly and simply yet with enough detail that you don’t get sent to 150 instructions other places and thus get lost from where you were learning? I just want to create a home page with sidebar that lists my few related pages; and then create a bunch of blog posts that show my images on the appropriate pages.

Am I stupid? Not usually. Am I trying to do something on WordPress when another kind of site would be clearer and, well, possible?

    Thanks for any help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Have you tried http://learn.wordpress.com ?

You COULD use Tumblr, but then nobody would ever find your blog except New York hipsters, and they don’t even have sidebars.

Thank you, yes, I have been to the learn section numerous times. Generally it is geared toward helping beginning bloggers decide what they want to blog about and how to start writing. It has links that seem semi-related to the supposedly easy image-related things I want to do, but then I never get back, and after not finding straightforward instructions. They must not exist.

I’m not impressed with WordPress and am giving up, but thanks also for the heads-up on Tumblr — won’t look there.

Well, what do you want to do? If you want specific advice on building a photoblog, Google is probably your best bet. If you know what you want to get done, but not how to do it on WP.com, ask specific questions. It’s certainly possible to do a photo blog here and there are numerous threads about it.

If you will please state exactly what you want to do then we can provide instructions. But as it is now we cannot help you because you have not stated exactly what you need help with.
uploading images posts, pages and media library > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/
    creating a gallery > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/
    extended gallery options > http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/extended-gallery-options/
excellent reference for gallery support > http://wp.me/p8gVp-L

Another alternative is to go to a site that free hosts only photo blogs like this one http://www.shutterchance.com/photoblog.php

Thank you both. Sorry, I was starting to lose it. Will try a gallery style when more familiar with blogs, but in the meantime putting images on regular blog pages (Greyez theme) is now working out and looking fairly decent. I do have a few specific questions, if you can help:

    1. Even when I don’t log in and just go to the blog as any person, I see “Edit this entry” as a red clickable thing at the end of each post. Can other people actually see that and click on it, or is WordPress just recognizing my computer?

    2. I meant to write a short description of my art process at the beginning of my first post. When I try to go back to the top and edit so I can type that, I can’t get out of the image mode. In fact, I know not how, but during the effort the spacing got a bit messed up between the first two images. How can I get to the top and insert some text before the first image?

    3. Last but not least, these forum posts of mine are turning up in google search, which is kind of mortifying. I tried changing my display name in my profile (to simply “nbs,” which would kill the search turnup), but didn’t work. How can I change my user name on this forum? And is there a way to edit my name on what I’ve already posted?

    Thank you!

    I

    1) that’s because your login is being stored. Other people do not see that.

    2) There’s a real bug right now with the caption code “grabbing” other text. I get around this by putting the image in, then clicking away from the Visual editor to the HTML editor. You can see the caption code because it’s got square brackets: just be CERTAIN to put your paragraph of text outside of the caption tags and you’re good: either before or after will work. You can even do what I do which is click to the HTML editor, type “wowoeikekfcisuijsjks” or whatever as a place holder, then click back to the Visual editor and type what I originally wanted to say, then strip out the placeholder text.

    3) Don’t sweat it too hard. When you have more blog posts, the posts will outrank this forum. You cannot change your username on this forum: for admin reasons, it will always be what you originally registered. But it won’t be long till your blog outranks the forum.
