<i tried to post yesterday, but this new netbook has a knack for suddenly deciding to change web pages and it looks like my response didn’t post. There’s an important consideration with this request.
It MAY get your blog suspended.
Staff have said that sites whose primary purpose is to drive traffic off WP.com to another site will be suspended. If your header links to another site, they might decide that is an issue. If your header AND background link to another site, then it becomes a near-certainty. You might want to contact Support and ask them directly before your blog goes POOF.

ok good to know i was just asking if it can be done and it looks like it can, but if it causes my blog to go POOF as you say then i’ll just leave it alone. again thanks for all your help.

What staff has said in the past, if I’m remembering correctly, is that a discrete link to your website in your sidebar is OK, but I know of many blogs that have gotten carried away and put links to their site at the bottom of multiple posts and pages, and have lost their blogs.
