Client already has blog.compdomain.com – wants to move www over now.
-
Background
A client of mine already has a blog on WordPress.com and has paid to use the subdomain blog.theircompanyname.com. They’ve had their main website separate for years and now want to transition it over to wordpress.com, making use of the fact that all of their blog posts are there and they’re comfortable with the platform now.Questions
- Do they have to start over fresh or can we now add the http://www.theircompanyname.com to their current wordpress.com account where they have already paid for the blog.theircompanyname.com? And then discontinue the blog. portion of it?
- They are currently only pointing to the WordPress.com IP address for their blog 192.0.78.12 (they are have name servers elsewhere)- so I’m assuming they can make the same change in DNS for the http://www.theircompanyname.com when we make the transition. Correct me if I’m wrong!
- Another assumption I am making is that we can just swap out the theme at the blog. version and start adding pages to it so that it will become their new main website when we ‘flip the switch’ to point the www. to the same location. Again, corrections are welcome.
This is the first time I’ve deal with a wordpress.com site – I’m used to the wordpress.org self hosted so this has been a learning curve for me. =D

Hi @akordata, glad you asked!
Do they have to start over fresh or can we now add the http://www.theircompanyname.com to their current wordpress.com account where they have already paid for the blog.theircompanyname.com? And then discontinue the blog. portion of it?
When they’re ready, have them get in touch with us ( via https://wordpress.com/help/contact ) to have blog.theircompanyname.com switched to just theircompanyname.com . Note we show domains without the www for a number of reasons, but we can still help point both blog.theircompanyname.com and http://www.theircompanyname.com to that same site.
so I’m assuming they can make the same change in DNS for the http://www.theircompanyname.com when we make the transition. Correct me if I’m wrong!
IP addresses can change because we do use load balancers here, so we recommend using our nameservers instead if possible:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM ,
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM , and
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMIf they’re using email and other DNS settings we can help them copy those over first.
Another assumption I am making is that we can just swap out the theme at the blog. version and start adding pages to it so that it will become their new main website when we ‘flip the switch’ to point the www. to the same location. Again, corrections are welcome.
Yup, if I were converting a blog to a website, I would start adding the other pages now, then work on changing themes and setting your new Home page to the front page of the site. Let us know if you have more questions on that.

We’re glad you’re here! WordPress.com can be awesome for freelancers, since we take care of the software itself for your clients. We have direct support for them too if they have upgrades. If you have more questions, let us know. Cheers :)
