Close older posts to comments

Since undetected comment spam is posted largely to older posts these days, can WordPress.com initiate an option to close comments on posts older than a fixed time period (say, a week? a month?)? It would be a big help!

It’s been suggested in the past. (Timethief’s big on the idea) Gotta amit that I’m not as most of my comments are actually to older posts. Best bet would be to submit this via feedback and suggest this.
Please stress the “option” portion of the idea. We went through this with auto marking of spam on any post 30 days or older with no option to turn this feature off which didn’t go over too well around here.

Actually there were only a handful of bloggers who appeared on the forum blurting the blues and alleging this didn’t go over well with them. The precious comments they appeared to miss were by and large one-liners that were not part of an ongoing dialog and did not initiate one either.

You certainly were. From where I sit any suggestion that this “coup” benefited the wordpress community.com as a whole would be laughable. IMO it led to a dramatic increase in spam for of us all just to keep a small but loud mouthed minority happy. |

Actually I don’t think I was. I sent in a pair of comments myself on the issue, both stated that I thought it was a bad idea. I still do. I know Akismet does false positives. We all do. I’m sure staff does as well even though they don’t/ won’t admit to it. Most of the comments on my blog are folks asking/ begging/ demeanding help for their wordpress blog or Gallery install or phpNuke install or what have you. Most of those get deleted. For me, it’s rather moot.
