Closing a photo gallery on wide images

A new gallery issue, never experienced previously.
When the gallery is closed by clicking the X at upper right, it closes properly when a vertical image is being currently displayed; but when a horizontal image is being displayed the gallery doesn’t immediately close, but displays an enlarged (horizontally cropped) thumbnail with a white background.
I’ve used the Twenty-Seventeen theme for some years, and this strange issue has never been seen before. It’s an issue because the user would need to click the X twice to exit the gallery, which is confusing and inconvenient. Yes, the user could close the gallery (successfully) by using ESC, but some people are unaware of that method, especially when an X is afforded for closing the gallery.
Open the gallery, and you will see how it closes differently dependent upon whether a vertical or horizontal image is currrently being displayed.
