Closing an account

I believe I unintentionally created an additional account with a different email address, but with enough information that it’s confusing things with the blog I own under a different account.

What’s confusing me is that, in this additional account, when clicking on ‘My Site,’ it shows the site I created with my other account. If figured perhaps I named this as an additional ‘user’ but I don’t see it in my original account user list.

What’s worse, is that I change my username on the other one to more closely resemble my full name and I’m willing to bet that’s what may be causing permission problems.

I would like to close this account to simplify things, but it says closing it will also delete the site, which this account should not have the authority to do, since it was created elsewhere and I have no admin access to from here.

I assume ‘delete the site’ means any site this account created and deleting the association with any other site created elsewhere, but that’s only an assumption.

Please help if you can and please don’t tell me to go to wordpress.ORG, which is a completely different account and my site account is on this domain.

    Thank you.

    –GV

    Hi GV,

[I] figured perhaps I named this as an additional ‘user’ but I don’t see it in my original account user list.

Where is your “original account user list” if not at My Sites? It’s not clear to me how the second account might have accidentally become a user on a site in the first account.

What’s worse, is that I change my username on the other one to more closely resemble my full name and I’m willing to bet that’s what may be causing permission problems.

Shouldn’t be a factor, but might be.

I would like to close this account to simplify things, but it says closing it will also delete the site, which this account should not have the authority to do, since it was created elsewhere and I have no admin access to from here.

The beginning of the Close Account page, arrived at via Account Settings, says:

Account closure cannot be undone. It will remove your account along with all your sites and all their content.

The statement about removing sites should only apply to sites owned by the username in that account, not sites in other accounts which that username is only a user on.

However, due to uncertainty regarding the relationship of the site to the account you want to close, and whether that site might be unintentionally be deleted should you close the unwanted account, I’m going to tag the topic for staff attention. Staff will respond here.

I happened across another topic in the forums with your name on it. There is another username for you that is gershonveroba. However, neither gershonveroba nor gveroba really own your site. Your site uses the WordPress.org software instead.

One of these accounts is linked to your site using the Jetpack plugin. You might have linked both WordPress.com accounts! The one listed at blog.veroba.net/wp-admin in the Jetpack plugin under Manage connection is the main one to use in my experience.

You can delete one of these WordPress.com accounts and keep the other for the Jetpack plugin. Because the username here on WordPress.com and the one on your site are not connected in any way (there is a separate users database on each site), the name and account you choose to connect to here doesn’t really matter. The warning regarding deleting sites is applied to all account closures, even if the account being closed doesn’t own a site.

Here’s a good explainer on the two things that are “WordPress”- https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

That will start to explain, and staff can clear up anything else.

    Hi there,

As Darcie said above, blog.veroba.net is not a WordPress.com site. It’s a self-hosted WordPress site connected to our system via the Jetpack plugin.

That Jetpack connection belongs to the username, gershonveroba.

The account you’re using to post here, gveroba, is also connected to the site via Jetpack, but does not own the connection.

Deleting either account won’t delete your site, as the site is not hosted on our servers, but deleting the gershonveroba account might cause issues with the Jetpack connection. Deleting the gveroba account shouldn’t have any effect on that site at all.

The other thread Darcie referenced above is https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/recent-post-not-responding-to-changes-but-others-do-plugins-error-on-update/
