Hello:
I recently started a blog at wordpress, only to find that I have one from several years ago, unused. Can I delete this old one without harming my work or access on the new site?

Yes, don’t worry, if you delete the old site it won’t affect your new site. You can do it from the Settings tab of the menu of the site, but be aware that if you don’t save it all your content will be lost.

Although, as I look at the delete instructions, it does warn me that “You will not be able to open a new WordPress.com account using the same email address for 30 days.” The new site I created is under the same email – though different password and not linked. Do you think I would still be able to access and work with my new site? Does “open” here mean “begin” or “use”?

For what you are saying, it looks like you are trying to delete your account, not your site. Deleting a site should not have anything to do with your email address.
I’ll double-check that you are in fact deleting your site and not your account before doing anything. -
These are a bit confusing. Perhaps it is the account I’m trying to delete. Let me try to differentiate.
I believe I have two different accounts, old and new – different usernames and unlinked. Each account only has one site – the old one has zero posts on it, the new one has a couple posts and several drafts. I would like to delete the old, and keep the new. Both accounts use the same email address, though accessed with different passwords.
Does this help explain the situation? I do apologize for the confusion. Thank you for your patience!

I think I understand what you are saying, but I’m afraid it’s not possible to have two accounts with the same email. Check your Account Settings in both accounts (https://wordpress.com/me/account, or clicking in the circle top right) and see if the email addresses are the same, that should clarify things.
