closing comments on individual articles

I may want to close comments on one post I will do soon, either from the time of publication or at some time after posting I decide to close the comments. But although my discussion settings say “these settings may be overridden for individual articles”, I cannot find any way to do that.

I want to be sure to keep all comments on other posts, and keep those posts open to new comments. I only want the ‘close comments’ option for one post.

    Thank you for your assistance.

By default all WordPress blogs have open comments on all pages and posts. Unless we use the P2 theme or P2 breathe theme which are Twitter-like theme the front pages of our blogs showcase content and comments are collapsed on that page and you cannot change this. The way the comments function is coded into the core of WordPress. By clicking the post title or the comments link the posts on the front page open on their own page where all comments display.

In a new blog one does not have many posts or comments. In an established blog if the comments did not collapse on the front page it would become a mile long in no time flat and page loading time is a page ranking factor. We have only seconds before visitors refuse to wait and click out.

You can enable and disable comments on WordPress.com blogs on this page Dashboard > Settings > Discussion
That is where you set up defaults for comments and other comment options http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
