CMS Style Site – Making Categories show like posts?

Just wondering if anyone knows how to show categories on the main page as if they were new posts. And when you click on the category link or picture, it goes to a page with posts in that category.
Here is a joomla template that is almost just like what I’m talking about. Anyone seen a wordpress theme like this? Or how to pull this off?

Can you give us a link to your WordPress.com blog, starting with http? The answer depends on the blog.

Its not for an existing blog, but for a page I may do for a friend. Haven’t really nailed down a theme yet, just want something clean and simple for a services site that will have a few pictures and probably 8 pages total.

Are you sure you really mean “as if they were new posts”?
If you simply want categories displayed in the main page, just set a static front page and write links to the categories in it. Can be pictures and/or text, formatted any way you like.

One possibility:
You can set (in Settings > Reading) a particular “static page” to appear as the site’s front page. (Ie: a Page rather than the customary “latest posts”.)On that static page you can write whatever you want, including a list of headings or blurbs with links to a page with posts from that category.
Would that be close to what you want? Only shortcoming is that this static front page would not automatically pick up new categories, you’d have to add them manually.
