Cntl-C and Cntl-V not working using block editor

  • Unknown's avatar

First of all, Cntl-C and Cntl-V works here, in the forum. It’s not unusual that, as I’ve often found, bugs in the block editor are not consistent across the board.

    Anyway, on with the issue.

Beginning yesterday, I’m unable to use Cntl-C and Cntl-V to copy-and-paste text (or anything). Oddly enough, the right-click options of Copy and Paste also do nothing, so this is not restricted to the keyboard shortcuts.

In the caption area of an image, the Cntl-C and Cntl-V key combinations do nothing. In a Paragraph block, typing Cntl-V inserts an HTML block at the edit point. The Cntl-C appears to do nothing.

I’ve tested this on two different browsers (Edge and FireFox), and the behavior is the same in both. Again, this started yesterday.

Cntl-C and Cntl-V work in both browsers when NOT using the block editor (and, again, they work here).

    Question:

Is this a glitch driven by the misguided need to make constant improvements changes to the editor, or is it something I screwed up by somehow triggering some hidden switch?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I emailed support (the Chat option was once again not available), but if anyone has a quick answer or has experienced the same issue, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

    Thanks,

    ejd

Upon further testing, this is what I discovered:

Copy and Paste work as usual as long as you’re not copying from an Image Block.

It sounds to me like a bug . . . I hope others can replicate it.

    1. create an Image Block, add an image, click on the Caption Icon, and type something in the Caption Field.
    2. Create another Image Block, add an image, and now copy the first Caption (any method) and try to paste it into the Caption Field of the second Image. For me, that doesn’t work (nothing happens).
    3. Now, try to paste the same text into an existing or new Paragraph block. For me, it consistently creates an HTML block at the cursor.

Let me know if others experience this behavior.

OK, I got an answer from Support (very quick they were). They confirm the behavior and have an explanation:

“What happens is that when selecting the caption of an image, the text and the HTML tag are being selected”

That’s why I’m not able to paste it to a different image caption, and why it inserts the HTML tag when I paste to a Paragraph.

The thing is, this is a recent issue as I’ve previously copied Captions.

Regardless, a suggested workaround is to have a text file open and first paste the text there, then copy it to a different Caption field.

Personally, I would start at the text file and then copy to whatever field I want.

Anyway, the problem explained, a quasi-solution is available, and it’s being passed on up the chain of development.
