code & columns
-
I was wondering if there’s a way to add HTML code to the column of my blog that is not posts (ex: a lead capture box). Also, I can’t figure out how to customize that column w/ text, pictures, etc. Can I? Is there a way to see the layout and to be able to move things around?

We need a link to your wordpress.COM blog in order to determine if you are in the right forum. And if you are hosted here, consider linking your user name to your blog as explained in the sticky, 8 Things, at the top of the forums.

Thanks, Vivian. I linked my user name to my blog (should be working now), and here’s a link: astarrallen.wordpress.com
Thanks for your help!

Great! Now, I have no idea what a lead capture box is but you might want to look at the contact form. As for your sidebar, spend some time looking at the widgets in your dashboard.
Probably the best place to start is here http://support.wordpress.com/getting-started/

If I’m understanding correctly, the code you are talking about is probably a form, and forms, javascript, flash and iframes are not allowed here at wordpress.COM due to security concerns.
You can post the code here in the forum for us to take a look. Put it between backticks (the key to the left of the #1 key with the ~ on it).

Okay, here’s the code
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://forms.aweber.com/form/56/582090956.js"></script>. It is a form, so I’m guessing it won’t be allowed. What about customizing the sidebar w/ text, photos, etc. How does that work? -
Yup, that is Java. Not allowed here for security reasons.
You can customize you sidebar with pictures and photo by using the Text Widget. You can style txt in the widget just like your post editor.
Here are some FAQs:

It is actually javascript and yes, it will be stripped out.
Check out the contact page option Vivian mentioned: http://support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
The contact will be emailed directly to you and then you can put them on your list. If you use this option, make sure and turn comments off for that page so it does not confuse things. If you want, you can use a text widget in the sidebar and put a link to that page in the widget.

Thank you all so much. This has been extremely informative and valuable.
One more thing…I just tried to add a contact form by typing [contact-form] onto my contact page as per the instructions I found via the link above. I’ve tried it several ways and it doesn’t work. Am I missing something?

Try placing the contact form code [contact-form] into the HTML tab instead of the visual editor tab. I’ve had problems from time to time with it. Also, in the discussion bar at the bottom of the editor, turn comments off for that page.

Okay…. I did that, but it doesn’t end up being a form w/ a place for name, email, etc. Just a big blank box. ????

That’s because you are logged in. If you were not logged in, those fields would show up.
