code displays as part of text

  I have made 16 successful posts, but the 17th attempt today has been a nightmare. I’ve uploaded text into the text editor, with html code already in it. Unlike before, the post displayed the code, and when I tried to edit, it changed it, for example <h2> becoming <p><b><h2>
  So, after a lot of experimentation, I removed all html from my source, trashed the previous post, and copied and pasted only the formatted text. It seemed all right when I published and viewed it. I got a shortlink, and clicked on it to try it out. What I got was again all the code showing up as it if was text.
