Code for key image without setting Featured Image

  I imported a fairly large blog from another site and, although none of the posts has a Featured Image set, nearly all begin with an opening splash image. For several reasons, I’d prefer not to have to set a Featured Image, but I would like the splash image to appear in search results and the like. (Currently, depending on the context, I either see no image or a randomly selected image in search results, the list of Posts in the Dashboard, etc.)

  Is there way to identify — such as by an HTML tag attribute or a CSS selector — which image should be considered the main image or the poster image (and treated like the Featured Image) for a post without having to set a Featured Image for each post?
