Code in Text Widgets and More

  • Unknown's avatar

Q1)I thought we could put code into text widgets? e.g. <p></p> <br/> <center></center> etc. Tried to, but it did nothing.

Q2)It also takes a long time for my sidebar widget page to come up and to save, is that common?

Q3) Can I get my text to align right next to my image in a post? Although I aligned the image to the left, my text would only start near the bottom of the image.

    Thanx much for the answers!

    1) Yup. Might help us help you if you told us what the actual code was you were trying to put in there though so we can see if there’s an issue with what you’re trying to do. Please paste it here in between backticks. That’s the key to the left of the ‘1’ key on a typical PC keyboard.

    2) Define long time please. Also what browser, browser version, OS and security programs are you using?

    3) FAQ

I am having a lot of trouble with text widgets:
    * sometimes they do not appear after I drag them into the form
    * it is not clear if text widgets are the same for the whole blog or are tied to specific posts
    * code so far has not worked
    * plain text seems arbitrarily to work – I have succeeded a few times but usually it does not work.
I also cannot find any clear and complete directions on exactly how to do the basics with text widgets. Please help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Browser, browser version and OS please.

Text widgets along with the other widgets appear along the side of your blog content. They are not page specific. Do note though that some themes only have this sidebar on the front page of the blog.

Can’t help you with the code unless you tell us what code you’re trying to use. i think I mention that there up a post. Reading a thread fully is something that’s important around here and frustrates the volenteers when you don’t.

Timethief has a post about widget basics but I don’t have that link handy. Oh Timethief…

I have also problems publishing the following code in a text widget:
    <script type=”text/javascript” charset=”UTF-8″ language=”JavaScript1.2″ src=”http://de.babelfish.yahoo.com/free_trans_service/babelfish2.js?from_lang=de&region=us”></script>

As soon as I save it, it disappears.
Works fine with typepad, the box shows up.
    Please help!

Javascript is stripped out of WordPress.com blogs. Also embeds, flash, forms, iframes, etc.

The reason for this is that we are on a shared blogging platform; essentially we’re all using the same blogging engine. If one person makes a change to it, it changes it for everyone. The thing with javascript, etc, is that it can introduce security holes that would be shared by everyone at WordPress.com. Because there are close to a million bloggers here, staff have decided to be very cautious about what they allow and consequently we haven’t been hurt by javascript-induced outages the way Blogger and MySpace have been.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow, someone actually followed a “Give us details” suggestion made in a thread. I’m impressed. :)

Didn’t we have a method of linking to Babelfish? I seem to remember that we did.

    edit: Here it is.

Well, then WordPress.com should find a way to elevate its security. I would rather deal with outages that last a couple minutes than deal with limitations posting content, especially since even after I paid to pay for CSS customization, I still can’t go beyond the WordPress themes you have provided. I am getting beyond frusturated

    @ragmag

I would rather deal with outages that last a couple minutes than deal with limitations posting content, especially since even after I paid to pay for CSS customization, I still can’t go beyond the WordPress themes you have provided.

You seem to be confusing issues here. What you paid for when purchasing the css customization upgrade was the ability to customize your cascading style sheet for one blog for one year and that’s it. You did not pay for anything other than that because nothing other than that was offered for sale.

    WordPress offers three different options.
    (1) You can edit your theme’s css style sheet or create one of your own only if you purchase an upgrade and undertake css customization yourself but you cannot use javascript for security reasons.
    (2) If you don’t purchase the upgrade, you can alter the appearance of your theme only through the use of customized headers and sidebar widgets. Note that if you do not opt for the upgrade then this link has information on point for you to read.
    (3) Although some themes at wordpress.org and wordpress.com may appear to be the same they are not; the software is different. The “please read me first before posting” pink sticky at the head of the forum outlines the differences between wordpress.com blogs and wordpress.org blogs which are on different code bases.

    A Brief Overview
    Two wordpress.com options.
    (1) You can choose a theme from the admin area of your blog -> Dashboard -> Presentation -> Themes and select one as is. Many provide for a customized a header and sidebar widgets allow for posting of unique images, etc. to personalize your blog.

If you do not wish to use one of the themes made available at wordpress.com through your admin section -> Dashboard -> Presentation -> Themes then you can choose to undertake css customizing a wordpress.com theme or make your own, or you can move to self hosting or a web host and altering a free wordpress.org template.

    (2) CSS customization can be used to improve on any existing theme; you can define your own classes for use in posts; you can select the Sandbox theme and build on one of the Minimalist layouts or, opt for no stylesheet and do it all yourself. If you feel you are up to the challenge of customizing a theme then these link, link, link will be helpful. There are also css resources that you can access listed in the FAQs blog.

The upgrade is not recommended to bloggers who do not have css cutomization experience. Although there is a forum and other bloggers may volunteer to help you if needs be, there is no staff support provided for learning css customization.

ragmag, we can’t help you if you don’t tell us what’s occuring or what you need assistance with. The themes are completely changable with the CSS upgrade. A perfect example of this is engtech’s blog and what he’s done with it. That was done with a standard theme and the upgrade.

It’s frustrating when folks come in here and bitch and moan but don’t give us any change to help them. Please don’t waste our time and yours. If you’re having a specific problem, please start a new thread and list your specific problem. The more detail the better. That way we can help you. All you’re doing right now is standing in the middle of the New Jersey Pike complaining about traffic.

And, no, we’re not talking about outages lasting a few minutes. We’re talking about passwords being obtainable, data being changed, and the like. That’s a little more than outages lasting a few minutes. There’s a FAQ about the security issues on the FAQ blog that includes examples of what occured with blogger and myspace. have you read it and the articles linked from it? You may want to.

And, no, I think the security of 800k+ blogs is a little more important than a single… well we don’t know what you’re trying to do since you don’t tell us.

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief, why did you write all that?

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress does offer a way to get beyond the limitations here and still use WordPress; find your own web hosting and install a WordPress.org blog in that space. Because it’s not part of the shared blogging platform, you can take whatever risks you want without it being an issue for other people.

    @drmike
I thought ragmag did not understand all the options available and that’s why I posted them.

  • Unknown's avatar

Because he’s trying to be helpful. Thank you Timethief. From the responses I get to my e-mails to support and your response “drmike”, its almost as if you’re not trying to retain anyone here. There’s no competition right? Don’t be nonsensical.
I thought I what I had already paid for would accomplish what Timethief outlined, not realizing that there is yet an extra charge. Looks like the “member” should be the “moderator”. Since you seem so interested, RAGMAG will be a blog essentially split into two with two different types of content. The success in this will be greatly determined by its layout and where content is placed.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @ragmag
Ummm … we’re all unpaid volunteers on the forum including our Moderator drmike. We are just fellow bloggers doing the best we can to help by providing the only information we have access to.

And if there was some error in what I posted then please, please tell me what it is.

As volunteers we have no mandate or vested interest in trying to retain anyone here. WordPress.com blogs are free of charge and those who do not accept the security limitations that come with working on a shared multi-user blogging platform have the option of moving to self-hosting or hiring a web host.

    You have said:

I thought I what I had already paid for would accomplish what Timethief outlined, not realizing that there is yet an extra charge.

    (1) What extra charge are you referring to please?

    (2) And what are your specific lay-out concerns?

Actually, I’m sensing that you may be better served by taking your unhappiness up directly with staff. Perhaps Mark can attend to your needs better than we can.

  • Unknown's avatar

It does sound like you’re going to need the versatility of a WordPress.org blog instead of what we have here, unless you’re extremely fluent in CSS editing.

  • Unknown's avatar

And again, you can do wonders with the css. Just look at engtech’s blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, raincoaster I would rather host on WordPress.org and I plan to make that transition in the coming months (have my reasons). In the meantime, trying to see what I can do on .com and will be looking at engtech. Timethief, I paid for the $15 upgrade. I don’t see any other CSS customization upgrade available.
