Code/Hosting

I am attempting to launch a website using my own code. Can I plug in that code onto your site? I also am looking for hosting, however most hosting site are partnered with WordPress installers, so I was wondering if you knew an easy way for me to connect my code to a website as well as my domain with hosting. Should I use word press for my code or just find a hosting service. I am very new at this and am a little confused.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @lavigneco,

If you want to practice your coding skills and also learn to use WordPress, I would start out with a WordPress.org site. Here you’ll be able to use your own code (whereas on a WordPress.com site you would not be able to do this).

You see, there is a difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. The very simplistic explanation is that WordPress.com is more plug-and-play where things like hosting, domains, updates etc. are handled for you. However, there are also restrictions to what you can do (like add your own HTML, Javascrip, PHP code etc.).

With a WordPress.org site, you would have to manage hosting, domains and the WordPress site yourself. Basically it requires more from you, but you also get more freedom to customize things and add code. To learn more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, please check out this helpful support article:

Let me know if this clarifies things, or if you have any more questions.

If you want to add any custom code, you’ll need to get a separate hosting as wordpress.com does not provide you with ftp access.

    Cheers! :-)

  • lavigneco – welcome to WordPress! I can understand that it’s a little confusing when you start. :)

jjberg83 already pointed you to a good resource. Let me add a few more thoughts:

I am attempting to launch a website using my own code. Can I plug in that code onto your site?

The only code changes you can make here on WordPress.com are CSS changes. The link jjberg83 provided explains the differences between being hosted here on WordPress.com and being “self-hosted.” Some other good explanations are here:

It sounds like you do want a self-hosted site. That’s where you’ll be able to experiment with your own code, if that’s what you want to do.

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that lets you update your content via any web browser without needing to know any code. You can choose from many pre-made themes (designs) and plugins (that add functionality). There’s no need to code anything yourself, unless you want to. Whether you choose to use WordPress or not really depends on your needs. If you want to experiment with making a static site yourself (outside of WordPress) then you’ll need to edit your files and upload them back to your server every time you need to make an update. WordPress (and other web-based content-management systems) allow you to set up a site that’s easier to manage, by logging into any web browser.

Hope that helps you make your decision!

If you do end up creating a self-hosted WordPress site running on your own server, the support forums for that type of site are over here, if you need any help:

    https://wordpress.org/support/

You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:

    Good luck!
