Colinear’s ugly PC home page: CSS solution?
-
I use the Colinear theme. The phone menu is fine – my posts are in a dropdown menu. But on a PC, there’s no dropdown. Instead, all the post names are splattered all over the first page. It’s horrible. I have a Personal plan, and I just discovered I can use CSS (Appearance / Additional CSS). I copied and pasted some CSS to fix Colinear’s visited links colour. Can anyone suggest a CSS fix for the PC menu?

I have a Personal plan, and I just discovered I can use CSS (Appearance / Additional CSS).
This is very curious because AFAIK CSS editing is available from the Premium plan and up. https://wordpress.com/support/editing-css/
As far as the appearance of Pages on a PC, have you thought about rearranging your site? It looks like all those links are blog posts.

My Personal Plan is ‘lower’ than Premium, isn’t it? It allows some CSS, but I don’t know if there’s code which would implement a drop-down menu on a PC. The PC home page displays all the posts at once. If you select a post, the display stays the same (apart from the URL). You have to scroll down to see the selected post, but you might not realise that. How would I ‘rearrange’ that?

It allows some CSS
Oddly enough, it shouldn’t. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
How would I ‘rearrange’ that?
In principle it isn’t necessary to add all your blog posts to the top menu. Why they are appearing there is a bit of a mystery to me.
When you set up your site in the Customizer>Homepage Settings, did you define a blank, published page as your Posts page or set it to display your latest posts on your homepage? That would have directed all your posts to appear on that special page and, hopefully, kept each blog post out of the top menu.
Keep in mind that any changes will also change how your site appears on mobile.
Also keep in mind that CSS can change how something looks, but it can’t change how something functions. So a “dropdown” menu would only work if you created a page and then added subpages to it.
Here’s a support guide that may help too

One last thing, Colinear is a very old theme and at some point may break after an update to the WordPress.com platform. If it’s important to you to keep your site up to date, then consider moving to a newer theme. If you want help with that, let us know.

Yes, please – help me! I chose Colinear for its simplicity. I haven’t made any changes which would have affected how the home page appears on a PC. It’s always been like that – no dropdown menu, just all the posts splattered across the page, and staying like that (apart from the URL) after you select a post. I’ve thought about upgrading to Premium, which I think allows you to try out other themes, finding a better theme, and then switching back to Personal.

If you want to stick with Colinear, try changing up the homepage settings in the Customizer following the menu guide I linked to earlier. Colinear is a Classic theme and those themes are no longer being offered in the theme showcase.
All the themes that appear now in the theme showcase are block/full site editing themes, which you can use “as is” without changing any template. You’ll still need to set a homepage, whether a static page or your latest blog posts. https://wordpress.com/support/migrate-from-a-classic-theme-to-a-block-theme/
If you want to “try before you buy” you can export some of your content and create a new free test site just for testing. https://wordpress.com/support/export/export-specific-content/ To create a new site, go to your My Sites page https://wordpress.com/sites and click the button at the top right “Add new site”.
The Personal plan can use any of the current free themes and themes included in the Personal plan. There are additional themes available on the Premium plan as well as the ability to use Styles. But use of those themes tied to a plan require having the relevant plan (even if you’re just testing).
Have a look at themes and I’ll check back tomorrow.

Actually, my query was apparently seen by a developer, who offered to sort it out with CSS for a reasonable price. I checked him out, and he seems OK, so I’ve given him admin access. I’ll report back 🙄

So, the developer, a young guy in Bangladesh, fixed it! He charged me $30. I gave him an extra $20. If Colinear stops being available at some point, I’ll cross that bridge then. (As a result of this process, I’m going to sort my posts into categories: politics, culture, philosophy, etc.) Thanks to those who’ve replied. Much appreciated! In I

@soothfairy, glad the menu is now working as expected!
That said, I’m not 100% sure about what was happening before and how CSS fixed it. As @justjennifer mentioned, CSS wouldn’t necessarily fix that; instead, it’s all about ensuring you have main menu items and sub-items as it was also shared on this link:
When you start a new site, a menu is created automatically. However, this guide will show you how to add a new menu from scratch. I’m glad you found someone, but the admin role is quite powerful. Now that the work is complete, I’d suggest keeping it only for you and close ones.
All the best!
