Collecting Email Addresses for Giveaways
-
I know WordPress.com does not support AWeber or other marketing systems. I need to collect the email addresses of opt-in followers for a project. How can I do that?
Second/related question: Where are the email addresses going when someone leaves a comment?
Blog url: http://seeleyjames.wordpress.com/The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
You could have them post comments to an entry page. If they choose to enter an email address, it will be visible to you in the Comments section Dashboard.
Alternatively, you could use a contact form: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
-
So the only way to capture the email addresses is to copy them out of the Dashoboard/Comments section and paste them into a database?
My users want a newsletter. How do I build/manage a dynamic list of email addresses?
-
You would need to either build it off-site with an off-site signup form, or just use your blog as a newsletter and add a Follow widget to your sidebar so people can subscribe via email.
-
OK, can you give me a hint: what does “build it off-site with an off-site signup form” mean in terms of WordPress.com? Will I need to host the “off-site signup form” on a different server, the link taking the user elsewhere?

Use a third-party site somewhere else that offers newletter services, and link to that.
-
Link via text widget?
Must say, a bit disappointing that WordPress.com doesn’t offer this as a service. Any future plans to add it?
-
Sure, you could add it via a Text widget, Link widget, Custom Menu widget, etc.
We have no plans to offer email newsletters beyond just subscribing to the blog via email.
-
Right now, when someone enters a comment or signs up for a newsletter, they enter their email address. Where is that list kept?
If I were to move the site, how would I get those emails for future newsletters?
-
The email addresses are attached to the comments and can be viewed via the Comments section of the Blog’s Dashboard.
Email subscribers are visible via a link near the bottom-right of http://wordpress.com/my-stats/
If you move to a self-hosted blog, just install Jetpack on that blog, and we’ll transfer your email subscribers.
-
Yes, I’ve been looking at the transfer options. wp.COM is a good company, taking care of us even on our way out when it didn’t fit. Nice.
