Collinear Theme – Social Icons in Header Image

This afternoon, I was busy revamping my site. Of course, it means changing the theme used for my blog. Originally, I used Collinear and it’s a nice theme. But, I wanted something different.

I gave Independent Publisher, a shot. With a couple of exceptions, I liked it. My main “like” came from the social icons menu being in the header part of the blog. It’s a shame Collinear did not have this.

Will the next generation have this feature?

My main “dislikes” for Independent Publisher came from the widgets being on the left side and there’s no clear separation between the sidebar and main content. It looked confusing. My other “dislike” came from the Image widget. For some reason, I didn’t get a widget title and Image didn’t seem to work.

Any idea of what’s next for Collinear?

    Hi Barry!

Any idea of what’s next for Collinear?

There aren’t any plans to update Collinear in the near future.

However, if you use the theme’s three column layout then you have the option of featuring a widget just beneath your header. You could add your social icons to that feature widget area.

You can check out the theme’s demo site for a clear idea of where the feature widget area is positioned:

    https://colineardemo.wordpress.com/

To enable this widget area, head to the Theme Options panel in the Customizer and then check any of the options for two sidebars. Save your changes and then navigate back to the Widgets panel to see and move your social icons to the new area.

My main “dislikes” for Independent Publisher came from the widgets being on the left side and there’s no clear separation between the sidebar and main content

I’ve had a look through our theme repository and come up with some more suggestions based on your likes/dislikes. Let me know if any of these work for you:

    * Twenty Sixteen has a clean and simple design, similar to Colinear. It features a social menu in the footer.

    * Fictive has a left sidebar, but prominently features social icons and has a clear divide between the sidebar/content.

    * Lyretail has social icons in the top header. I’m not sure if this would work for you as widgets are tucked away at the top too, but wanted to throw it out there as a suggestion. :)

Let me know what you think of those options or if you have any further questions.

    Hi siobhyb,

I took a look at the three themes and I wasn’t entirely happy. So, I went back to Independent Publisher and I did some digging.

I found out why I had problem with the Image widget. I must have put my caption in the wrong spot. If you visit, then you’ll see that it’s working.

As for the sidebar, it seems everything is aligned to the right; if the blog is viewed on a desktop. However, it looks and read great on my tablet and smartphone. It seems I can’t change that.

I’ve a minor question. How can I get rid of the word count? It just looks a little odd.

    Hi Barry,

I’m glad you were able to figure that out! I can confirm that the link to your book is working correctly for me now.

As for the sidebar, it seems everything is aligned to the right; if the blog is viewed on a desktop. However, it looks and read great on my tablet and smartphone. It seems I can’t change that.

I can see what you’re referring to and have contacted the theme’s author to check if the right alignment in the sidebar was a deliberate design choice. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them.

I’ve a minor question. How can I get rid of the word count? It just looks a little odd.

There isn’t a built in way to remove the word count.

If you upgrade to one of our paid plans then you would have access to more Custom Design options, including the ability to add CSS and hide the word count. Let me know if you decide to upgrade at any point and I can help with the specific CSS that’s needed.

Let me know if you have any extra questions on that and have a lovely weekend too. :)
