color swatches
-
Hi, I just want to add color swatches for different color variations of the products in this site, but this is not going to be an e-commerce site, I won’t sell anything, just a sort of a catalog site. How can I do that without turning it into a shopping site?

Hi there,
Is this for https://heiketextilien.wordpress.com/?
It depends on what exactly you have in mind: If you just want the product images available in different colours, you use a slideshow block so people can cycle through the different variations. Or if you want a main product image with a bunch of swatches below it, you can use a combination of an image block for the main image, with a gallery block below that containing small images that’s really just a solid-colour block of the colour you want.
But if you want it to behave like an online store, where you have the product image, and the image itself changes based on the colour someone selects, you’ll need to use an ecommerce plugin like WooCommerce, and set up proper variable products. In that case you can use an add-on to remove the checkout features, so the site functions as a catalogue instead, but the foundation of the site would still be an ecommerce plugin.
Does that answer your question? Let me know if not, or if you have any further questions about this.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply, it’s helpful. Yes it is for https://heiketextilien.wordpress.com/, I’m still working on it (made out of Edin theme). I actually want it to behave like an online store as you’ve put it. Then I have a few more questions;
-Do I have to pay anything If I activate woocommerce and that feature of it?
-Can I use it in this theme (Edin) or do I have to upgrade it or choose a different theme instead?Thank you again

To use WooCommerce will require our Business Plan, and to remove the checkout features so the site functions as a catalogue you’ll need an add-on for WooCommerce, like https://woocommerce.com/products/catalog-visibility-options/ (you could also use custom code for this, but you’ll need to know about PHP code and WordPress development to do that). The cost of any add-ons for WooCommerce aren’t included in the cost of the plan you buy from us.

Edin doesn’t specifically support WooCommerce as far as I know, but it might still work just fine. It’s possible some of the special pages WooCommerce adds might not be fully styled with a non-ecommerce theme like Edin, but 1) if you use a Catalogue add-on to disable ecommerce features you won’t be using most of those pages anyway, and 2) you can always add your own styling using custom CSS code if needed.

Thank you again, and one more question so I can decide.
What if I change the theme and make a new site, using another (free or paid) theme that has this feature?
or a theme based on e-shopping that supports woo commerce, would I still have to upgrade to use woo commerce? -
To use any plugin you’d need to be on our Business Plan, so the theme doesn’t make any difference here.
There might exist a premium WordPress theme that would allow you to create a catalogue site like this without using plugins, but using a third party theme on WordPress.com also requires our Business Plan.
I guess the bottom line is that the functionality you want isn’t something that’s built into WordPress, and needs to be added via third party add-ons you install, whether that’s a plugin or theme. With the built-in features you can get something approximating what you want, but it won’t be as sleek :)
