  I am trying to change the default smilies, but can’t, please advice.

  That’s not possible here at WordPress.com. Go back to this thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/can-the-default-smilies-be?replies=2#post-1516199 knowing you will have to hire a web host and set up a WordPress.ORG install if you want to use those.
