Coloured text controls in Gutenburg editor preview?

    I assume I’m not the first to post about this, so apologies for repetition but:

    The ‘old’ ‘classic’ editor has a lot of advanced features for text editing, including text colour (and background colour) controls. I use (sparingly), text colour on some items in blog posts to provide a quick visual reference for the topic being addressed (so this is like a ‘bold’ highlight, on a single word or small number of words, as part of a paragraph), coded by the colour used.

    Trying the ‘new’ Gutenburg editor, I see that even using ‘classic’ blocks, much of the useful advanced text editor options are gone, including text colour.
    (And ‘converting’ the classic block to Gutenburg ‘paragraph’ blocks removes any existing text colour options too.)

    Is there any way to get useful advanced text styling options in Gutenburg, or am I going to have to turn it off (and resort to manually editing html when Gutenburg is forced on me, if this isn’t resolved by then)?

    Hi @aoanla, would you be willing to share an example of the work you were doing previously so we can share it with our developers?

    For what it’s worth, while we don’t have options to control the color individual words at this point, you can find color settings for the block on the left.

    The use of colour is minor, only applied to individual <span> s within text, but also important to add value to the list items and make it easier to scan through for particular kinds of things.
    (Block settings are too coarse to be useful for this, sadly.)

    I should say, the current version of the Classic editor is really good, and one of the problems Gutenburg has is that it’s just not as mature as the editor it’s trying to replace.

    Hi there,

    You can always use the classic editor block which inserts a block with all of the functionality of the current editor.

    Indeed, it does, but it would be nice to be able to rely on the “improved” editor not deprecating functionality. (I am not clear on how long the “classic” block will remain after WordPress moves to Gutenburg, and if advanced text styling will be implemented in its successor.)
