columnist theme

I like the look of columnist and I’m trying it out on a private blog.
1. On the home page, a ‘list’ of blogs appear as grey rectangles with the post title and excerpt (if any). fair enough.
it seems that the only way to change the grey rectangle to an image is to set a FEATURED IMAGE within each post. Is that correct?
I would have expected the HOME PAGE IMAGE OF EACH POST to be the first image it finds in the post.
2. There are no widgets that can be set at all for the main HOME PAGE…is that correct ie you can only set them on individual posts.
3. Are there any good examples of this theme being used please?

Yes.
Featured Images
If you assign a feature image to one of your posts it will display differently depending on which template you are viewing. For instance: on the home page as well as all other pages that display multiple posts, your featured image will appear cropped at 180 pixels wide by 180 pixels tall. In cases where your original uploaded featured image is 610 pixles wide or wider, it will also appear at the very top of single posts and pages.If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options

No.
A post will also display an image if that image is the first image you upload via the Add Media tool of that post.
