Columns in 2010 theme

  I’m struggling to put a twitter timeline widget into my blog. I can follow the instructions OK, but when it inserts ‘into the sidebar’, the widget appears as a new post.
  On the right hand side of the blog I have “Archive” and “Meta” stuff, and I thought the widget would appear there in a right hand column.
  As far as I can see, my 2010 is set up for 2 columns. Am I doing something wrong?
