.COM hosting questions
-
Comparing against .org sites on Bluehost, do .com sites offer:
– CDN (content delivery network), where content is cached on servers for faster loading.
– Cloud hosting, where sites are duplicated on multiple servers around the world and have zero down time if a server crashes.
– Backups & restores.
– Security against malware, viruses, & spamming within the comments fields.
– Analytics, not just of general traffic, but where users clicked on the page. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

actually i cant get your question either you are asking simple question or you are asking something different then what i though soplease elaborate a little about first line of your question??

Hi lindaaswanson,
I haven’t been able to find the answer to your first bullet. I know that VIP WordPress.com supports CDN and other kinds of caching, but I’m not sure about non-VIP .com hosting. (Maybe someone following this thread can chime in?)
All the other answers are ‘Yes’.
Have you seen this article comparing .com and .org? https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
I switched from .org to .com several months back, so I have some experience on each. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks for your fast responses!
@whatastatusblog: A CDN is a network of servers around the world that cache the static parts of your site, instead of your site only being on one single server. So if you’re trying to access a site in San Francisco, but you’re in New York, it’ll serve it to you from a NY-cached server, which is closer and thus faster. Akamai is an example of a company that caches web sites across their global servers.
So what I was asking was whether WordPress.com’s servers utilize CDN networks for faster performance.

@dwnc: By VIP, do you mean the Business plan?
https://wordpress.com/pricing/Thanks for confirming the other questions.
Thanks for the link. I had read that comparison page and should’ve already realized it includes backups & security. They say “Premium hosting”, but I didn’t see any details on what that entails.
Interesting that your transitioned from .org to .com. I hear the reverse is inevitable at some point. I took a class in the free .com site, but I’m not sure what the big selling point is of the 44,000 plug-ins. What is all that added functionality that .com doesn’t offer? I can’t think of anything else I need that isn’t in the simple .com site.

VIP is an Enterprise-level service, beyond the Business plan. Here is some info about it: https://vip.wordpress.com/
I was hosting .org on Hostgator, which worked out fine except that I couldn’t keep up with all the upgrades and backups across several blogs. I fell hopelessly behind. So I decided to try .com. The pinch points so far for me are these:
I can’t control the format of the URLs (or permalinks) for posts, pages, or uploaded media.
Related to that, my custom domain is just an alias for an underlying WordPress.com site. For example, mydomain.com points to the underlying mydomaindotcom.wordpress.com. This means the actual URLs for the files on the site are something like mydomaindotcom.wordpress.com/files/foo
Finally, in .com there is no ability to modify HTML, only CSS (if you upgrade your plan). The theme I am using (Harmonic) isn’t quite configurable enough to achieve what I want, so an HTML tweak would be really handy. I’m having to compromise a bit on the design in order to have the benefits I like about .com.
Hope that is helpful.

@lindaaswanson I dont get your question still. What your are looking for WordPress Hosted or WordPress hosted at Bluehost/Cloud VPS ?
And again confused with your org vs com domains. Its upto you to choose domain based on your project and there is nothing to relate it with hosting.
One thing I can say is, if you need more wp customization stuff, go for external hosting even cloud like digitalocean or any and install wordpress with good backup plugin. -
Hi @lindaaswanson ,
To address each of your original points,
We use CDNs for images, but you can actually use our image CDN with Bluehost as well via Jetpack.me . We also use caching. You can install caching plugins on your own with another host, too.
Sites on WordPress.com are load balanced, served from multiple servers.
While we do keep backups, we do not have any simple means for restoring. However, you wouldn’t be modifying your code anyway. You do get revisions for your posts, pages, and for CSS if you use it.
We take care of security re: malware and viruses.
We also filter comments and comment forms for spam, or you can use the Akismet service to get that on your own self-hosted site.
And the Business account allows Google Analytics, though you would be in charge of configuring that the way you like it.
The last big difference is that we provide support for paid accounts at WordPress.com . For WordPress.org, and for free accounts, you would ask the community for help.
I hope that helps!
