Ok, I just asked the question which was resolved a few hours ago about custumizing the search. Now, I’m not sure if I want to stay at wordpress.com or move to a self-hosted wordpress.org site. I want to change the search as mentioned in my last post, but I don’t want to pay for a webhost. I like wordpress.com as it is probably the most accessible site I’ve found. (See the history of my site and the free and accessible web hosting site for more information) Any suggestions?

Hi Bob. With a self-hosted WordPress.ORG blog, you will still have to pay for a hosting provider, as well as for a domain name registration every year. A basic WordPress.COM blog is free. So I guess you’ll have to think about what’s most important to you.

You can get quality hosting for not that much. The Tiny package at A Small Orange is only $25 per year (a little over $2 per month). I’m hosted there with two sites, and I also have several clients there as well and I’ve been very satisfied with their service. Technical support should you encounter issues is top notch and very quick to respond.
With self-hosting, you will be responsible for all installations, all upgrades, all backups and all troubleshooting. If the blog breaks, you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it.
Most good webhosts have one-button installs of the most popular software packages such as wordpress, so the initial installation is typically painless. Sometimes the installer scripts might not install the latest version, so sometimes you have to do an upgrade immediately, but wordpress has an automated upgrade feature that is fairly solid and generally trouble free.

Yes, it’s up to you. I also use A Small Orange for my web hosting and I’m pleased with the service and the support.
