.com or .org
-
Sorry to no doubt be repetitive, but having spent most of the morning trying to have this answered I am no further forward.
I want to build an updated version of my photography website. It’s currently hosted on LCN, but was built by my previous developer in Perch CMS (which I loathe).
I love the idea of wordpress and found a theme called Soho, which I love the look of.
After learning of the 2 different WordPress approaches (hosted or self-hosted), I am now totally confused as to which to use.
I think my requirements are straightforward – I want the website to have my current address http://www.psdphotography.co.uk If it can be hosted by LCN still, that’s great. But I don’t really care who hosts it so long as customers can see the website and it is easy to move hosting to wordpress if required.
I want to be able to add content, blog posts, pages, change photos etc – all the usual easy stuff for keeping my website up to date.
Ideally I’d be able to use a theme like Soho, which looks good and also claims to be responsive (very important as my current site is not).I have no technical knowledge at all (could you tell?), but if I need a .org self-hosted site then I’ll have to set about learning.
What would you recommend? -
Hi there,
I’ll start off with these two links which are very helpful –
https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/com-or-org/If you don’t have technical knowledge and you don’t want to get your hands dirty with code or any of the tech stuff, then I would suggest you to go for WordPress.COM site.
I want to be able to add content, blog posts, pages, change photos etc – all the usual easy stuff for keeping my website up to date.
All of this that you mentioned can be done here on WordPress.COM.
But if you go into the complex stuff like adding a custom plugin or a JavaScript code, that is not allowed on WordPress.COM
I hope this clears up things a bit. But if you have more questions or doubts, feel free to post them as a reply to this post. :)

Thanks. I’ve read both links and sub pages, as well as tried to find out what other photographers do.
It seems to me to have a nice looking, well run website on WordPress I can use the .com version, but I pay monthly to remove ads and get my own domain name. Whether or not I stretch the budget to also get rid of wordpress branding is another decision.Or I take the plunge, buy a theme, do it myself and learn through my mistakes I guess. A few people have said it gives you far more flexibility to do it yourself, but in your experience, is it even possible for a beginner to go down the self-hosting route (bearing in mind I already have the domain and hosting)?
