COM to ORG, mySQL and migration

  • Unknown's avatar

I just spent 12 frustrating minutes with live chat at HostICan, after following the link from org. I should have had a support person, I had a sales person instead who told me there is no way to migrate my blog without access to mySQL.

Is this true, and if so, how do I gain access? And can anyone answer the question I asked him twice without a satisfactory answer: if I go self-hosted, is there a way to get things set up there before redirecting my wordpress.com blog? There has to be!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
I got a second domain so that meant everything could be set up first and then repointed.

If you migrate to wordpress on another host, it is a simple things of using Admin => Export from .com and Admin => Import on your new host fresh wordpress install. It has nothing to do with direct access to the database, but you will find much more in the .org forums for sure on this topic.

Thanks to both of you. That’s what I suspected, but I was not at all comforted by the level of support by that host.

Oh, argh. Now I’m on with ANHosting and being told it’s possible to set up wordpress without pointing the dns but I will not be able to view changes. I am not impressed.

Since it looks like you just started with them, maybe think about asking for a refund and checking out dreamhost or bluehost or somone like that ;)

Oh, I haven’t given anyone a penny yet. I was looking for answers and trying to get a feel for online support. Not feeling warm and fuzzy. Or in capable hands. sigh…
