Hey thanks for the link frenchiesandcoffee. When I go to set up my WP site it asks if I want to transfer my domain or map it. It says that “premium ” addresses cant be transferred. It listed .com as one extension that is “premium ” .com is like the most basic domains so I was just trying to figure out if that was correct.

    Hi again,

This might help clear it up! :)

There are two options to connect a domain:

Transfer the registration. Your domain registration and billing will be moved from your current domain provider to WordPress.com. That means in future you’ll manage all aspects of your domain here, including renewal, cancellation, or a future transfer.

Map the domain. Your domain registration will stay with your current provider, and you’ll point the domain to WordPress.com instead. Use this if your domain is less than 60 days old, or you have a domain extension that cannot be transferred to WordPress.com. The domain will show your WordPress.com site, and depending on how you point it here you’ll be able to set up email and manage your DNS via our domain manager, but you’ll still need to pay your current provider for the domain’s renewal every year.

    Hello @dmc761255

Note: Premium domains currently can not be transferred in to WordPress.com. These domains are typically more expensive than a regular domain due to its perceived higher value. These domains can have any top level domain (.com, .org, .services, etc).

    Quoted from: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/#which-tlds-extensions-can-i-transfer-to-wordpress-com

.com domain falls under premium domains that are typically expensive than a regular domain and currently cannot be transferred in to WordPress.com. You can map it instead.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi there,

What is the domain you’re trying to transfer?

“.com” is not a premium domain. It’s not even a domain.

.com is a “top level domain” (TLD), or domain extension. A premium domain would be something like football.com – a domain created using a very popular word before the extension, which means people are likely to be willing to pay much more than the standard price for a .com domain to have it.

There are a limited number of .com domains that are premium, with a near-infinite number of .com domains that are not. If the .com domain you own was premium you would know it, as you would have paid hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to register it when you first bought it. If you bought it at a standard retail price then it’s not premium, and you will be able to transfer it to us.

    @raunaqchawhan
, thanks for trying to help, but your interpretation of the support page you quote is completely inaccurate. The support page clearly refers to “top level domain” which is the extension, or second part of a domain name, not the domain itself, and mentions that premium domains can have any TLD. The three listed in brackets are examples of TLD, not a list of premium domains.

Thanks @kokkieh for the explanation :)

  • @dmc761255 if you’ll let us know what the domain is, we can tell you whether it can be transferred here.

If it ends in .com and you’re paying pretty normal yearly fees for it, it can most likely be transferred in without a problem. We’d be happy to confirm for you.

Thanks everyone for the responses. My interpretation was the same as @raunaqchawhan , because it just states “.com” etc. as not being able to be transferred. I suppose the wording leads some readers in the direction that all domains ending with a .com extension are premium. I did go ahead and register with WP and I was able to transfer it. If anyone on this thread has the ability, maybe the wording could be changed to state more clearly that only domains with higher billing above a certain threshold cannot be transferred, and maybe not even mention the extension. Just a thought. Thanks again everyone!!!

  • Hi there,

Thank you for the suggestion, but the wording currently is technically accurate and changing it may result in other misinterpretations. I think that adding an example will be the better option.

Thanks again and let us know if you need help with anything else!
