If you purchase the $17.00 .com domain name do you also need a server to run the website? Or does it still run through word press? This is my website in question: http://bf3nsa.wordpress.com/
Basically I just want to know if I’d have to pay to run a server as well.. to change it to bf3nsa.com

No you do not. If your purchase a domain mapping upgrade yopur blog is still free hosted by WordPress.com, unless you choose to hire a web host and move the content into a WordPress.org self hosted install. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/#important-notes-before-upgrading

To change it you need to finish the Domain Mapping that you purchased – as noted above no charge for hosting but mapping to change the name as you want to do does cost a little bit.
